Former Viking Lays Down Challenge to Patrick Mahomes and His Pals

Reigning NFL MVP and Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes is fresh off Super Bowl immortality in February, and now he’s winning golf showdowns with his peers.

It’s been a wonderful spring and summer for Mahomes, who, along with teammate Travis Kelce, toppled dynastic NBAers Steph Curry and Klay Thompson in a celebrity golf match on Thursday.

But now, former Minnesota Vikings cornerback Patrick Peterson wants a shot at the title.

Evidently following the match closely, Peterson tweeted after the first hole, “After watching that first hole. ? I’d like to publicly challenge Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, Klay Thompson, and Stephen Curry to any dollar amount of their choosing! Taking all bets! ???.”

Peterson signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers in March and is on deck to start for Mike Tomlin’s team.

Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady took on Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen in the same event last year, and the two older guys were triumphant. In fact, Mahomes-Kelce versus Curry-Thompson was the seventh annual installment of the event called The Match.

Curry and Thompson’s Golden State Warriors fell to the Los Angeles Lakers in Round 2 of the NBA’s playoff tournament in May. The two are tentatively slated to headline the Warriors roster this October.

Mahomes told CNN after The Match, “We knew coming into this that if I just played decent, we were going to have a chance. Steph’s a great golfer, I thought Klay did a good job out there today. But they didn’t have that team aspect that we had. Literally, I would hit a terrible shot, Trav would hit a great one, and vice versa. That’s what it takes in a team event like that, and I think we went out there and showed what we can do.”

It is unclear if Peterson’s challenge will actually be accepted — probably not. But Peterson’s Steelers could meet Mahomes’ Chiefs in the 2023 postseason if both teams reach the dance.

The Vikings host the Chiefs on October 8th at U.S. Bank Stadium. The Chiefs and Chargers are the only NFL teams yet to play at U.S. Bank Stadium. Both clubs end the drought this season.

Mahomes has tallied a win over every other NFL team in his career, except the Vikings (mainly because he’s never played them).
