Vikings Waive Veteran CB

The Minnesota Vikings kick off 2023 festivities in three days at home against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a team navigating life without Tom Brady for the first time in four years.

Along the way, Minnesota undertook some roster housekeeping Thursday, cutting ties with veteran cornerback Tay Gowan.

Star Tribune’s Andrew Krammer revealed some minor injury news and mentioned the Gowan roster move in a tweet Thursday afternoon, “Vikings added punter Ryan Wright to the injury report with an ankle injury, but he was listed as a full participant. Linebacker Troy Dye (elbow) also remained a full participant. The team also agreed to an injury settlement w/ CB Tay Gowan and waived him from I.R.”
Gowan will now hit waivers and can sign anywhere in the NFL — probably on a team’s practice squad, if at all — if he clears the process.

The Arizona Cardinals drafted Gowan in the 6th Round of the 2021 NFL Draft. He remained a Cardinal for six months before the Zach Ertz trade, joining the Philadelphia Eagles for the rest of 2021. The defender then stayed with the Eagles for 10 months but was waived during last summer’s roster trimdowns.
And that’s where the Vikings entered the chat, scooping Gowan off the waiver wire and plopping him on the roster for the 2022 season. As a Viking, Gowan played in three regular season games, encompassing 15 special teams plays and zero defensive snaps.

In April, the 25-year-old used the X app, formerly known as Twitter, to affirm his commitment to excellence in the NFL, and he didn’t much care if folks didn’t believe him.
Gowan tweeted on April 14th, “In my football career God has always made me wait my turn… I’ve been doing that. Every time I got my turn I showed out! Bring out the film. #MyYear.”
“I know what I’m capable of and I know what I bring to the table,” Gowan added.

While 2023 could indeed become Gowan’s year, it won’t be with the Vikings, barring a re-signing sometime down the road. These are the Vikings cornerbacks on the regular season roster with Week 1 less than 72 hours away:
CB1: Byron Murphy
CB2: Akayleb Evans
CB3: Mekhi Blackmon
CB4: Andrew Booth
CB5: NaJee Thompson
Corners Joejuan Williams and Jaylin Williams fill out Minnesota’s CB group on the practice squad.
