The Takeaway from Kirk Cousins’ Comments at Minicamp

A pretty significant contract development unfolded during Kirk Cousin’s minicamp press conference on Wednesday.
Cousins, when asked whether he expected any extension talks before the season, answered, “I think we’ll probably talk about a contract next March.”
The Takeaway from Kirk Cousins’ Comments at Minicamp
While this doesn’t so much come as a surprise, it’s a big deal.
After the draft, there was speculation the Vikings would revisit Cousins’ contract after they could not land a consensus quarterback of the future — the thought being they could add a year or two to buy them time to find Cousins’ successor.

Today, Cousins’ comments brought that notion to rest.
By playing out his deal, the team is sending a signal that there’s a real possibility of a new quarterback leading the huddle in 2024. It cements the reality that the Cousins era in Minnesota may come to an end sooner than some expected.
Of course, Cousins can still be extended next March.

If extended in 2024, the four void years added to Cousins’ contract this offseason to save cap space will be added to Cousins’ new deal at $7M/year.
If Cousins is not extended, the dead money from the void years accelerates into 2024, leaving a $28M cap hit.
From a roster-building perspective, the Vikings maintain flexibility moving forward, leaving all options on the table as they see how the 2023 season plays out.
