Seahawks Cut Former Vikings RB

The Seattle Seahawks fired up a winning record in 2022 in a season where they were ‘supposed’ to start over with a foundational reset.

But the club had no patience for that, finishing 9-8 with reclamation quarterback Geno Smith at the helm. The Seahawks reached the postseason, looked like wizards by accruing ample fruit in the Russell Wilson trade, and now have lofty plans in 2023.

Along the way, Seattle is tweaking its roster before 53-man cut-downs next week, and one former Viking was waived Wednesday — running back Bryant Koback.

KPRC2’s Aaron Wilson tweeted, “Seahawks waived Bryant Koback with addition of Jordan Ferguson.” Ferguson is an undrafted free-agent pass rusher who was waived a few days ago and will return, at least for a few more days, to Seattle’s 90-man roster.

Koback will hit the waiver wire and can be claimed by any NFL team in order of last year’s win-loss standings. If no team takes the plunge, he’ll hit open free agency.

The Toledo alumnus joined the Vikings about a year and a half ago via undrafted free agency. He failed to make the 53-man cut during roster trimdowns last summer but did remain with the club on the practice squad for all of 2022. At age 25, he hoped to latch onto the Seahawks active roster or practice squad, but those plans are now in jeopardy if not kaput.

Koback rushed for 4,206 yards and 45 touchdowns in 44 games at Toledo, an impressive statline for, well, anybody.

This is Seattle’s RB room now without Koback and before the roster-cut deadline next Tuesday:

  • Kenneth Walker III
  • Zach Charbonnet
  • DeeJay Dallas
  • Kenny McIntosh
  • SaRodorick Thompson Jr.

Koback’s main ‘problem’ as a rookie was the Vikings running back depth. Minnesota utilized Dalvin Cook, Alexander Mattison, Ty Chandler, and Kene Nwangwu at RB, meaning no roster spots were available for Koback or anyone else. And this year is no different — probably why Koback wasn’t prioritized to re-sign. Minnesota has Mattison, Chandler, Nwangwu, and rookie newcomer DeWayne McBride, among others, on the current roster, an already crowded backfield.

Koback banked 70 yards from scrimmage against the Vikings in the first preseason game of 2023 on August 10th. The man looked quite productive.

Sportsbooks forecast the Seahawks to win 8.5 games this season, the same over-under as the Vikings.
