NFL Insider Claims Vikings Want Kirk Cousins Back in 2024

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins ranks tops in the NFL in touchdown passes, second in passing yards, and 10th in EPA+CPOE.

And even with those impressive marks, his team owns a 1-4 record and the league’s most turnovers through five games.

Accordingly, because Cousins is playing on the final year of his contract, most view the next 12 games as perhaps his last in Minnesota after six seasons. The Vikings are somewhat likely to explore a quarterback on a rookie deal in the 2024 NFL Draft to pair with Justin Jefferson’s soon-to-be elephantine contract.

But those Cousins-is-gone theories might be premature, according to NFL insider Jay Glazer. He believes the Vikings want Cousins to return in 2024 and beyond.

Glazer said on The Rich Eisen Show this week, “I think the Vikings want him back. At least in camp they did. I haven’t been back there since camp, but I think they wanted him back then.”

A lot has changed for the Vikings since training camp — mainly too many losses — but Glazer left the door open for a Cousins seventh season in purple. He continued, “I don’t know where you could go, especially with the type of contract he’s going to want. See, here’s the thing too with the trade deadline. The guys that do normally get traded are somebody in that last year of their deal. You’ll see a billion names out there right now. So, it’s usually a guy in the last year of their deal who you’re not only trading for, but you do have to give them some sort of monster contract going forward.”

Wherever Cousins lands in 2024, Minnesota or otherwise, he’s likely to fetch at least $40 million per season via his next contract, also known as the new Daniel Jones rule.

Is the Competitive
Brad Rempel-USA TODAY Sports.

“It’s usually somebody who probably is not going to re-sign them so let’s go get a bunch of picks for them. I want everybody, when they’re looking at the trade deadline, to look at those names not just ‘Well, this team stinks, so they’re going to have a fire sale.’ Not everybody is just going to have a fire sale because their team isn’t doing well,” Glazer added.

A “fire sale” is a frequent topic of Vikings-themed discussion after five games, as several teams may bolt to offload players while hoping to land the draft pick for April that nets Caleb Williams or Drake Maye. It is unclear if the Vikings will sell assets in the next 19 days, with the NFL’s Halloween trade deadline looming.

There’s also next to zero precedent for a quarterback leading the NFL in touchdown passes to be traded midseason.

But if Glazer is accurate, Vikings fans may experience no Cousins trade at all, and the man could return for his age-36 season.
