On Tuesday, the Indianapolis Colts worked out former Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kellen Mond for a practice squad assignment.

But before that, the same team auditioned another former Viking, safety Myles Dorn, on Monday.

KPRC2‘s Aaron Wilson tweeted, “Colts worked out Cameron Brown, Myles Dorn, Don Gardner and Anthony Miller.”

If Dorn’s tryout went well, he could end up on the Colts practice squad, the same fate perhaps awaiting Mond.

Dorn was a member of the Carolina Panthers to start the 2023 offseason, signed by Panthers general manager Scott Fitterer in January but was released in June. He then ventured to the Miami Dolphins for three weeks, later placed on injured reserve on August 24th, and subsequently waived with an injury settlement.

The son of retired NFL cornerback Torin Dorn, the defender joined the Vikings via undrafted free agency in 2020 and stayed linked to the organization for three seasons. In 2022, Dorn resided on the practice squad for most of the year. The North Carolinian played 14 total games in Minnesota, tallying 208 special teams snaps but no defensive appearances.

Dorn would’ve played for the Vikings in 2022 if injuries arose to Harrison Smith, Camryn Bynum, Josh Metellus, or Theo Jackson. But aside from Lewis Cine’s broken leg in London, Minnesota’s safeties remained upright, for the most part.

The young safety stood out as a positive for the Vikings throughout the preseason in 2022. He appeared in all three games and started one of them. Dorn recorded 13 tackles during the appearances and had a pair of passes defended.

The Colts safety room before Dorn’s possible addition currently looks like this, including the practice squad:

  • Julian Blackmon
  • Rodney Thomas II
  • Nick Cross
  • Trevor Denbow
  • Ronnie Harrison Jr. (PS)
  • Henry Black (PS)
  • Marcel Dabo (PS)

The Colts defense ranks 16th leaguewide per DVOA, and Shane Steichen’s team shares a first-place lead in the AFC South with the Jacksonville Jaguars at 3-2. With QB1 Anthony Richardson presumably hitting the shelf for an undetermined amount of time due to a shoulder injury, the club will turn to Gardner Minshew in hopes of keeping the winning record afloat.

Dorn turned 25 in June. He also worked out for the Houston Texans in July, to no avail.
