Eagles Sign Former Vikings RB

The Philadelphia Eagles downed the Minnesota Vikings eight days ago, 34-28, and now they’re adding a former Vikings running back to the practice squad.

Philadelphia is 2-0 to start the season, with sights set on a Super Bowl reappearance after narrowly falling to the Kansas City Chiefs last February.

So, to bolster RB depth, the Eagles added Bryant Koback on Wednesday, and he’ll live on the practice squad indefinitely.

Eagles insider John McMullen tweeted, “All the Eagles roster moves today: CB Avonte Maddox was placed on IR and PR/WR Britain Covey was elevated from PS. TE Brady Russell signed to Seahawks 53 from Eagles PS and RB Bryant Koback and Edge Kyron Johnson signed to the Eagles PS.”

Koback was a member of the Seattle Seahawks for three months this summer but hit free agency after Seattle’s 53-man roster trimdown on August 23th. He later rejoined the Seahawks practice squad and was swiped this week by Philadelphia.

The Toledo alumnus joined the Vikings about a year and a half ago via undrafted free agency. He failed to make the 53-man cut during roster trimdowns last summer but did remain with the club on the practice squad for all of 2022. At age 25, he’ll hope for a regular call-up to Philadelphia’s active roster sometime this season.

Koback rushed for 4,206 yards and 45 touchdowns in 44 games at Toledo, an impressive statline for, well, anybody.

The Eagles running back room + practice squad now looks like this:

  • Kenneth Gainwell
  • D’Andre Swift
  • Boston Scott
  • Rashaad Penny
  • Bryant Koback (PS)

Koback’s main “problem” as a rookie was the Vikings running back depth. Minnesota utilized Dalvin Cook, Alexander Mattison, Ty Chandler, and Kene Nwangwu at RB, meaning no roster spots were available for Koback or anyone else. And 2023 was no different — probably why Koback wasn’t prioritized to re-sign. Minnesota has Mattison, Chandler, Myles Gaskin, and rookie newcomer DeWayne McBride (PS) on the current roster, an already crowded backfield. Minnesota also added Cam Akers via trade this week.

As a Seahawk, Koback banked 70 yards from scrimmage against the Vikings in the first preseason game of 2023 on August 10th. The man looked quite productive.

Koback will seek his first career regular season rushing attempt in 2023 if he’s promoted to the 53-man roster.

The Eagles offense ranks 18th per EPA/Play through two weeks.

Philadelphia also employs former Vikings linebacker Christian Elliss.
