Vikings Territory Breakdown—Spotlight on the QBs

It is said that quarterback is the most important position in all of sports. Perhaps that’s true, but it certainly is in the NFL, and the position is currently getting a lot attention this offseason. The Kirk Cousins talk never seems to quiet down for the Vikings, and what will happen to him next season will continue to engender speculation and discussion in the coming weeks.

But Cousins is not alone in the speculation pocket. He may be desperately looking downfield for an open receiver (the Vikings keeping him would be the proverbial checkdown), but the talk will continue for plenty other QBs also.

Aaron Rodgers, our favorite attention diva to the East, has finally made the decision to stay in Green Bay (and there is good and bad in that for the Vikings). The Packers wanted him back and beat out three teams (Pittsburgh, Tennessee and Denver, who reportedly had trade scenarios in place) with a four-year, $200 million deal that will ease his cap hit and allow them to franchise tag wideout Davante Adams and bring him back (that is the bad news for Minnesota—the good news? We are still working on that).

Mark Craig of the Star Tribune will break that down on the Vikings Territory Breakdown podcast with VT senior writer Joe Oberle.

Rumors of Seattle’s quarterback Russell Wilson being unsatisfied and potentially on the move persisted this week (and for a time involved Minnesota). But the Seahawks traded Wilson to the Broncos for QB Drew Lock and a boatload of picks (not including Herschel Walker) to further weaken the NFC conference teams and bolster those teams in the AFC West. We will discuss the ramifications of that blockbuster deal.

And then there are the new quarterbacks, those who spent time last week in Indianapolis having their bodies, brains and skills measured at the NFL Combine. The Vikings brass spent some time chatting with those potential draft picks, so, at the very least, they are looking at the position with future considerations. As far as the Purple and their fans are concerned, the quarterback issue can’t be settled soon enough.

Like dominoes lined up in some Rube Goldberg maze, the quarterbacks are stacked up near the Vikings and any one of them falling into place could affect what happens in Minnesota. That makes for some exciting offseason chatter—tune in to check it out.
