Gotta Hear It: Vikings Quote of the Day — February 23, 2022

Brace Hemmelgarn-USA TODAY Sports

Each day, we select a quote about the Minnesota Vikings, uplifting the sentiment of the day or highlighting something notable.

The remark can come from a Vikings player, coach, writer, fan — or anybody, really. Selection of the quote is arbitrary. The excerpt may be insightful, humorous, groundbreaking, outlandish, or foolish. If you have a quote of the day (your own or from someone else), please send it to [email protected].

Meanwhile, Kyler Murray‘s possible frustrations have only recently come to light. That’s if there’s anything going on at all.Still, it won’t prevent us or anyone else from speculating all season about Kyler Murray trade scenarios this offseason. This quote is from February 22nd, 2022, posted by Taylor from Twitter. She captured the essence of the complexity involving a Kirk Cousins trade.

What’s crazy is how people think Kirk Cousins is a garbage QB but in the same sentence say the Vikings can get a haul for him if he’s traded. ?

And here’s the official tweet:

This aptly describes the dynamic — and perhaps hypocrisy — of trading Kirk Cousins. Only Top 12 or so quarterbacks in the NFL will command colossal trade capital. Matthew Stafford did so one year ago. He won a Super Bowl some 12.5 months later. And Carson Wentz, who was traded afterward, didn’t quite schlep the Stafford sum to Philadelphia when he was traded to Indianapolis.

Cousins cannot be a middling, underwhelming quarterback — and turn around to retrieve vast trade compensation. If he’s good, he’ll draw a 1st-Rounder plus some deal sweeteners. Should the destination team value Cousins as average or merely serviceable, Cousins would fetch mid-round picks. This is straightforward.

So, those who believe Cousins should command high draft capital must admit the Vikings simply don’t know how to use the player. Otherwise, the team — or opinion holder — has lost their mind, overvaluing players out of sheer lunacy.

If you must “pick a side” inside the Cousins debate, be consistent. If he’s a damn good passer, the Vikings will receive damn good compensation. The other alternative is declaring Cousins isn’t very good, and thus Minnesota shouldn’t receive much in return.

Pretty common-sense stuff.
