Kirk Cousins Foregoes Chains, Buys Grass Instead. The Golf Kind.

By this point, as long as you’re not living under a rock, you’ve seen that the Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins looks good iced-out after wins. You may not know that rather than buy chains of his own, he’s decided to invest in grass instead.

No, Kirk Cousins hasn’t entered the marijuana business, but he now owns a golf course. If there’s something that’s been a talking point in recent offseasons, it’s about just how much money Cousins makes. The Vikings have invested a significant amount of their cap space into the franchise quarterback, and after all, he has to find something to do with it.

According to Golf Digest, Kirk and his wife Julie bought Saugatuck’s Clearbrook Golf Course in Michigan. Cousins played his college football at Michigan State in East Lansing, about an hour and a half west of the course. Clearbrook sits on Lake Michigan and offers spectacular views throughout the round.

The course wasn’t purchased to change what is already going on there, and the family released a statement saying, “Our family recently purchased the Clearbrook Golf Course from our friends and longtime owners, Jim and Candy Jeltema. They have managed the course for many years, making Clearbrook a place of connection and fun for our entire community.”

As many professional athletes do, I’m sure Cousins finds plenty of time to golf in the offseason. Minnesota has plenty of beautiful courses, and it appears the Cousins also have an affinity for this particular course in Michigan. I have no idea what type of positive or negative financial investment a golf course may be, but the land itself should undoubtedly appreciate in value.

Give it to Cousins. While he’s been decked out in some expensive ice flying ten thousand feet up following the Vikings seven wins this year, he went a more conventional route in spending his money. Here’s to hoping he can make it to his newly owned course donning a nice gaudy Super Bowl ring following a successful end to the Minnesota season sometime in 2023.
