Adam Zimmer was the Vikings co-defensive coordinator in 2020 and 2021. Before that, he was the Vikings linebackers coach (2014 to 2019), Cincinnati Bengals assistant defensive backs coach (2013), Kansas City Chiefs assistant linebackers coach (2010 to 2012), and New Orleans Saints linebackers coach (2006 to 2009). Zimmer was hired as an offensive analyst for the Bengals after leaving Minnesota in January.

On Zimmer’s watch as linebackers coach, Eric Kendricks and Anthony Barr truly blossomed into NFL stardom. He also won a Super Bowl with the Saints in 2009.

ESPN’s Field Yates tweeted about Zimmer on Tuesday, “Adam Zimmer was a good man who lived for his family, faith, and football. He learned how to coach from his father and coached every day to honor the legacy of his mother, who was lost way too soon. He was a proud son, brother, and uncle.”

The Bengals tweeted, “Our organization has had the privilege of knowing and working with the Zimmer family for 15 years. We have the highest regard for Mike and Adam, and we are incredibly saddened by this tragic news. Mike and Adam were more than just coaches for us — they were friends. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Zimmer family at this time.”

Zimmer rejoined the Bengals in July, embarking on a first-time adventure via the offensive side of the ball. At a young age, his resume was expanding and becoming more diversified.

The cause of death was not immediately known.

Zimmer was 38 years old.
