Yes, the Vikings should at least kick the tires on Deebo Samuel

By AJ Mansour

Apparently this is the thing to do in today’s NFL. You scrub your social media timelines of references to your current team and a few days later share of your intent to be traded away from said team.

Wide receiver Deebo Samuel is just one of the latest to follow this trend and the reports flying around Wednesday morning are that he indeed is looking to get out of San Francisco. So should the Minnesota Vikings be engaging with the 49ers to see what a potential trade might look like?

I mean, why not?

Deebo proved in 2021 that he is one of the best wide receivers and x-factor players in the entirety of the league. While he may not be interested in being used as a running back for the rest of his career, right now his ability to both catch the ball and run the ball at a high level sets him apart. Adding a player of this ability to the fold in Minnesota would only help Justin Jefferson and Kirk Cousins take the jump to that next level.

Don’t forget that new head coach Kevin O’Connell comes from an organization in L.A. that not only locks and loads up the wide receiver’s room, but also found success trading away future assets to build the team with proven pieces in the league. This would be the same sort of situation.

So what would it cost?

Most recently, Tyreek Hill was traded to the Miami Dolphins for five picks. One first round pick, a second round pick, two fourths and a sixth. I think most of the fan base would do this, but would the new front office?

It’s intriguing, to say the least. There is a pipeline laid between Minnesota and San Francisco with new GM Kwesi Adofo-Mensah spending time there in the past. Would he be willing to part with their #12 pick this season? With a few future picks? Maybe part ways with running back Dalvin Cook? Maybe someone on the defensive side of the ball?

Then there’s the defensive side of this conversation. Not necessarily the on-field defense, but the off the field, inside the division defense that can be played by preventing him from landing with a team like the Packers.

Green Bay recently shipped Adams off to Vegas and got a haul in return. Now Aaron Rodgers is left with not a whole lot of options to throw the ball to on the field. It’s very likely that the Packers will be making a phone call to The Bay Area later today to discuss.

The fact of the matter is we just don’t know, and that’s kind of fun. We don’t have a track record to base any of these decisions off of, but we do know that it’d be worth their while to at the very least inquire. I mean, every team in the league should at least look into it, you never know!
