Vikings Quote of the Day: February 19th, 2021

Each day, we select a quote about the Minnesota Vikings, uplifting the sentiment of the day or highlighting something notable.

The remark can come from a Vikings player, coach, writer, fan — or anybody, really. Selection of the quote is arbitrary. The excerpt may be insightful, humorous, groundbreaking, outlandish, or foolish. If you have a quote of the day (your own or from someone else), please send it to [email protected].

This quote is from February 18th, 2022, posted by Dominique Clare on Twitter. Clare is the proprietor and writer for SportsAndFitnessDigest.com.

Clare said on Friday:

“It’s funny how differently everyone interpreted the Vikings press conference. Everyone heard what they wanted to hear. Just like everything else in life. KOC somehow said that Cousins is an average QB who isn’t a leader that elevates the team in addition to also saying that Cousins is the face of this franchise and the Vikings are going to extend him forever.”

And here’s the official tweet:

Clare’s words encapsulate how folks think in The Digital Age. Words are extrapolated via soundbite and used for narrative proliferation. For the essence of new coach Kevin O’Connell’s thoughts on Kirk Cousins, one must watch the entirety of the event for context.

O’Connell was diplomatic with his analysis of Cousins, explaining the quarterback is indeed under contract, so the assumption is Cousins is the guy at quarterback. Of course, Cousins could refuse to restructure his contract, leaving all options for trade open to general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah. And if that trade occurred, O’Connell would have said nothing foolish or false in retrospect.

If You Wanted a Vikings Rebuild, You're Not Getting It.

The takeaway from the O’Connell press conference was coach-speak about the current QB1 of the football team. The new coach confirmed he can utilize Cousins’ talents within the new offense — and he plans to do just that based on the current standing of the depth chart.

But things change. O’Connell won’t be incapable of winning with a different signal-caller, just as his former boss Sean McVay was able to orchestrate winning seasons with Matthew Stafford and Jared Goff. Football is a team sport, and the quarterback is responsible for much of the accountability for an organization.

Yet, the quarterback is merely a piece with the 52 other men on the squad.

O’Connell was high on Cousins. He won’t be aimless if Cousins is traded. If you shut off the television believing O’Connell finds Cousins infallible — or that Cousins is assuredly on the trading block — you’re mistaken. The new coach chose diplomatic words as most newcomers do.
