Vikings Have a Look at New QB
Brett Hundley

The Minnesota Vikings employ Kirk Cousins, Kellen Mond, and Sean Mannion at quarterback, and the team took a look at one more on Friday.

Brett Hundley, a former division foe, tried out at Vikings rookie minicamp to round out the week.

Last year, Hundley was a backup quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts, supporting then-starter Carson Wentz. The Colts nuked all semblance of QB continuity this offseason, trading Carson Wentz to the Washington Commanders, acquiring Matt Ryan via trade from the Atlanta Falcons, and allowing Hundley to hit free agency.

Hundley was drafted in the 5th Round of the 2015 NFL Draft — the pick after the Vikings selected Stefon Diggs. He started his career with the Green Bay Packers, mostly as the QB2 to Aaron Rodgers. After the 2017 season, Hundley plotted course as a journeyman, landing with the Seattle Seahawks in 2018, Arizona Cardinals in 2019 and 2020, and the aforementioned Colts last season.

In seven seasons, Hundley has participated in 18 games, starting nine of them — all with the Packers in 2017 when Aaron Rodgers was injured. Green Bay was 3-6 (.333) with Hundley at the helm. Hundley owns a 9-TD to 13-INT split in his career.

The UCLA alumnus is more mobile than the Vikings are accustomed to at quarterback. In those nine games filling in for Rodgers, Hundley tallied 270 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Vikings incumbent quarterbacks, Kirk Cousins and Sean Mannion, aren’t known for mobility. Mond, on the other hand, is more nimble.

If Minnesota signs Hundley, he’d immediately vie for the QB2 job. Mannion isn’t very productive in glimpses on a regular-season field, and nobody knows if Mond is any good. Hundley has a documented history of QB2 service — much more, relatively speaking, than Mannion and Mond combined.

Hundley has a history of backing up stellar quarterbacks. He’s been the backup plan to Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson, and Kyler Murray to date.

Additionally, he was teammates with Eric Kendricks, Anthony Barr, and former Vikings punter Jeff Locke at UCLA.

Hundley is 28 years old.
