The Vikings Cornerback Room Just Got Better

The Vikings Cornerback Room Just Got Better
Davante Adams and Allen Robinson

The Vikings’ free agency has been a relatively slow one. They have made a couple of small-time moves like signing specialists, a backup offensive lineman, and a couple of players likely to be starters. Those players are Jordan Hicks and Harrison Phillips.

However, the cornerback room just got a little better. How did they get better when they didn’t sign anyone? Well, you don’t need cornerbacks when the teams in your division don’t have good wide receivers.

News broke earlier today that Allen Robinson was signing with the Rams. Robinson was the best wide receiver that the Bears had and was underutilized in 2021. However, in previous years he had tortured the Vikings defensive back group. With him gone, life just got easier.

The big news, though, is that Davante Adams was traded to the Raiders. Vikings fans are well aware of the torment of watching Adams put our cornerbacks on skates. Well, that is all over now.

Trouble Across the River

The Packers traded Davante Adams to the Raiders for multiple picks. Adams made it abundantly clear to the Packers that he had no intention of playing on the franchise tag. He wanted a long-term deal and to be the highest-paid receiver in the NFL.

He earned the right to be the highest-paid receiver in the NFL. There is no question that he is the best wide receiver in the league. Now the Raiders paid up with a 5-year $141.25 million contract. Now that’s a BAG. The Packers reportedly offered to match the deal, but Adams decided to walk.

Cam Dantzler and Kris Boyd are breathing a sigh of relief, knowing they don’t have to try to defend him. They have been burned so many times, it’s difficult to see a scenario where they are not rejoicing. Even Dalvin Cook earlier in the offseason, before Rodgers made his decision, said he wouldn’t mind not seeing Rodgers or Adams in 2022.

How is this trade going to impact Rodgers’ relationship with the Packers? He already signed his deal, so there is no going back on that now. Although, there is no way he will be happy about losing the guy he targeted most frequently in 2022.

Pair this with the fact that the Packers have not drafted a wide receiver in the first round since Rodgers has been their quarterback. If they stick with that pattern, they could have a very unhappy quarterback.

Vikings Still Need Cornerbacks

Ok. It’s fun to talk trash when something negative happens to the Packers. It’s our duty as Vikings fans to dislike them. But all jokes aside, the Vikings desperately need cornerbacks.

Regardless of whether or not the Bears have Robinson or the Packers have Adams, the cornerback room is bleak. The Vikings have entered the beginning of the league year with four cornerbacks on the roster:

  • Cameron Dantzler
  • Kris Boyd
  • Harrison Hand
  • Perry Nickerson

This group is not capable of competing at the NFL level. Kwesi needs to add at least two cornerbacks this free agency. If he doesn’t, well, it’s going to be another interesting year.
