With 2021 Hall of Fame Festivities in the rearview  – notable Viking Steve Hutchinson got the nod – brainstorming the 2022 candidates is on the agenda.

Per BetOnline.ag, the frontrunners for gold jackets at this time next year include DeMarcus Ware, Devin Hester, Tony Boselli, Torry Holt, Reggie Wayne, and Robert Mathis.

Jared Allen, who spent six seasons with the Vikings (51.3% of this career), is also up for consideration, carrying 3-to-1 odds for induction. Allen will be among next year’s interesting names and will eventually enter the Hall of Fame, even if takes an extra year or two.

Then, a longer shot is up for Hall of Fame review, too. That’s Chad Greenway, a linebacker that played in Minnesota for his entire career.

Greenway currently has 33-to-1 betting odds to reach the Hall of Fame in 2022, an underdog’s probability. If one wagered $100 on Greenway’s admittance, the payout would total $3,300.

A two-time Pro Bowler in 2011 and 2012, Greenway played in 156 games for Minnesota, which ranks as 27th-most in Vikings history. All told, the South Dakota native partook in more Vikings games than Chris Doleman, Matt Birk, and Kyle Rudolph.  In 156 games, Greenway notched 1,103 total tackles (or 7.1 per game).

Drafted in the 1st Round of the 2006 NFL Draft – the same event that turned out Vernon Davis, Jay Cutler, and Mario Williams – Greenway’s 1,103 tackles from 2007 to 2016 ranks second in the NFL, trailing only linebacker Paul Posluszny (1,153 tackles). Posluszny spent time with the Buffalo Bills and Jacksonville Jaguars.

Greenway also delivered 62 tackles for loss, ranking 30th in the league among linebackers during his ten-year career. He’s also credited with 42 quarterback hits.

The Vikings appeared in five playoff games with Greenway on the roster. In Greenway’s maiden playoff voyage, the Vikings lost to the Philadelphia Eagles, 26-14, in the 2008 season. One year later, Greenway was a part of the almost-storybook 2009 run when the Vikings thumped the Dallas Cowboys but fell to the Saints in New Orleans. After that, Minnesota reached the playoffs on the back of Adrian Peterson in 2012, an MVP campaign for the former Vikings halfback. And sadly, Greenway’s final playoff experience was Blair Walsh’s missed field goal – which canceled the Vikings advancement to the Divisional Round of the 2015 playoffs.

Pound for pound, Greenway’s best season was 2012, tabulating 148 total tackles, four passes defended, and seven tackles for loss.

The Vikings linebacker played with a few Hall of Famers, too. Greenway was teammates with Steve Hutchinson, Brett Favre, and Randy Moss. Too, Adrian Peterson will receive the honors on his first ballot of eligibility five years after he retires – which might be years from now per Peterson’s current pace.

It is unlikely that Greenway reaches the Hall of Fame without any All-Pro recognition or participation on Super Bowl-winning teams. But his resume is robust.
