Zimmer calls Vikings D “worst one I’ve ever had” after Saints embarrassment

Tell us how you really feel!

For those of you that didn’t end up muting Troy Aikman’s repeated talking point of Minnesota Vikings head coach being displeased by the awful tackling (or awful attempts to tackle, as tackling implies success), or that the Vikings defense will be back because Zimmer is this or that. I applaud you.

In fact, I applaud Anyone that made it through today’s game period. While the offense did well, Kirk Cousins in particular, it clearly wasn’t enough to keep up with a banged up and rusty Drew Brees, no Michael Thomas, and lots of Alvin Kamara.

Aikman pointed out during the game that Zimmer was going to be particularly miffed once he saw the tape on the fourth (or fifth? Or SIXTH?) Kamara Touchdown as the Vikings seemed to be having some sort of inside joke/bet about playing defense sans arms.

The 52 points the Saints scored against the Vikings were the most in 57 years in Minnesota, so, with that and the above you won’t be surprised that Zimmer said the following during his post-game presser:

Now. He isn’t wrong. The defense played bad and this is the worst Zimmer defense yet. He also isn’t wrong to point out that things will be better when guys like Anthony Barr/Eric Kendricks/Danielle Hunter return.

But it’s the “… The Pro Bowl Players, the GOOD players that we have to have back” that might rub some current players (ie the bad ones) the wrong way.

Zimmer could’ve accomplished the same by omitting that last part and communicated everything he wanted. Instead, he did what he always does, by basically throwing his players under the bus and taking no responsibility.

Some of these guys are playing out of position, or starting after not having a pre-season (which every team also dealt with but every time also didn’t lose 13 defenders from last season via injury, free agency, and COVID opt outs), so they don’t need to hear that the solution basically “wait for the GOOD players”.

I don’t know. It’s a tough business and these guys get paid a lot of money, and I had coaches when I played Pee Wee hockey that said borderline illegal things to or about me. So, I don’t want to sound like the guy who feels like Zimmer is being mean! Waa!

I just don’t think that’s a great motivator. I think it’s counterproductive, and I do think it’s unnecessary, as he could’ve communicated this in a way that could avoid the issues Zimmer has had for this very reason from coming back up.

The good news is that the season is nearly over. This season will be written off by the powers that be in Eagan, as there were far too many injuries for this season to be held against Zimmer.

Unless he irks some of the young stars on either side of the ball. Then, the team may have to put their foot down and remove Zimmer. Because, as you’ll see soon in a piece I’m working on with current/former Vikings players/coaches about the Zimmer Method.

From what I’ve heard already?

Let’s just say that the above isn’t an isolated incident nor is it even 1% of what the issues seem to be.
