A day after the Green Bay Packers were officially eliminated from the playoffs, the team officially ended the season of its star quarterback.

According to the Packers official Twitter feed, quarterback Aaron Rodgers was placed on injured reserve Tuesday. The move came a day after an Atlanta Falcons victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday Night Football mathematically eliminated Green Bay from playoff contention.

In a corresponding move, the Packers signed quarterback Joe Callahan to the active roster. Green Bay released the 24 year-old on Saturday to make room for Rodgers, who was activated from injured reserve prior to the Packers 24-31 loss at Carolina on Sunday.

Green Bay plans to start quarterback Brett Hundley for the remaining two regular season games. The 24 year-old is 3-4 this season with eight touchdowns and eight interceptions. He has a QBR of 48.6, but is capable of making plays with his legs.

The Packers take on the Vikings this Saturday and they’ll travel to Detroit to face the Lions in Week 17.

The move is good news for the Vikings defense, who held Hundley to 18 of 33 passing for 157 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions the last time the two teams squared off on October 15th. The Vikings cruised to a 23-10 victory over the Packers in Week 6.

The Vikings are still in contention for the NFC’s No. 1 seed. They will need to win their final two games (at Green Bay, vs Chicago) and the Philadelphia Eagles will need to lose their final two games (vs. Oakland, vs. Dallas) in order for the Vikings to gain the top spot in the conference.

Minnesota can clinch a first-round bye this weekend with a win over Green Bay combined with a Carolina loss (vs. Tampa Bay).

The Vikings will travel to Green Bay to face the Packers on Saturday evening at 7:30pm (CST).
