Smith and Waynes Ruled Out for Sunday

By Brett Anderson

The Vikings have announced that they will be without both safety Harrison Smith (knee) and cornerback Trae Waynes (ankle) for Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons.

Smith hurt his knee early in Minnesota’s game last Sunday against the Green Bay Packers. He was able to finish the game, but needed to wear a brace on his knee to do so.

Waynes’ injury comes as more of a surprise, as his name did not appear on the injury report until Thursday.

The absence of Smith in the lineup comes as a blow to the Vikings defense that will look to prevent Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones from having a big day. Safety Antone Exum Jr. will likely replace Smith in Minnesota’s starting lineup, as he is listed behind Smith on the team’s depth chart.

  • That is truly a shame. Squaring off against Julio without Harrison and Trae. Already seem to struggle at safety regardless of who is playing back there with Smith, and Trae has been looking very good at times in spot duty.

  • Not good at all! VIKS, 1st pick for 2016 should be a SS next to Smith! 2nd OL 3rd WR 4th OL

    • I know it's uncharacteristic of the Vikings to use top draft picks on offensive lineman (outside of Kalil), but I think going SS over offensive line would be a mistake.

  • In the name of put the next guy in- let's see what Exum can do, offense will have to do the heavy lifting- needs to be Norv's 'finest hour'
