Vikings Rookie Camp Feature: John Oyloe, DL, University of Mary

By Lindsey Young

At 6’5″, 260 lbs, former University of Mary defensive lineman John Oyloe is ready to strut his stuff at the Minnesota Vikings Rookie Training Camp in Eden Prairie this weekend.

If all goes as planned and Oyloe impresses the coaches and staff, the DL will have a chance to earn a free agent contract.

Oyloe is a native of Williston, ND and was a three-time All-Northern Sun performer for the Marauders. Oyloe grabbed 54 tackles in 2013, including 8.5 sacks and 10 tackles for loss. Overall, the senior was third in the league in sacks.

Oyloe wrapped up his college career as U-Mary’s No. 1 tackles for loss leader (41) and No. 2 for career sacks (27.5).

According to the official U-Mary website, Oyloe is the third Marauders player to receive an NFL tryout over the past four years.

GET TO KNOW JOHN OYLOE

Q: How long have you been playing football?

Oyloe: I Have been playing for as long as I can remember. Whether it was flag football or just playing catch with my dad, I got started very young.

Q: Have you always played the position that you do now?

Oyloe: I played defensive end and tight end in high school in western North Dakota, and [I was] recruited to play tight end in college. I switched back to DE after my redshirt year, and  I played DE and DT in college.

Q: What does it mean to you to be invited to the Vikings rookie training camp?

Oyloe: It means a lot to me to be invited to the Vikings camp. Guys put in a lot of work for a chance to show what they can do on the field, so I am very thankful to get this chance.

Q: What number do you wear and why?

Oyloe:  I wore number #9 in college; I thought a single digit would look cool on a defensive lineman.

5. If you could have 1 day to train with any current NFL player, who would that be? Why?

Oyloe: I would like to train with Jared Allen.  I could learn a lot from him on how to play the game.

  • Nice article Lindsey!
I'm happy for Oyole, but he has his work cut out for him.
The good news is he was invited to rookie camp and has an opportunity to stand out. The bad news is the Vikings are loaded at DE.
Griffen, Robison, Wotton, and Cricton are locks to make the roster... and the back-end depth fighting for a a 90 man roster spot and/or PS shot are.. Jake Snyder, Rakim Cox, Spencer Nealy, Scott Tyler and Justin Trattou (all good players). One of these final 5 might have a shot at the 53 man roster.
If Oyole can steel a 90 man roster spot from one of these guys, more power to him.
27.5 career sacks is pretty impressive.
    Good luck John!
