Vikings Say Adios To Audie

By Adam Warwas

There is little we fans find more frustrating about our Vikings than their willingness to sit on young players, hoping they develop into quality players via practice rather than rushing them into action before their ready.  The frustration is compounded when we never get a chance to see what the player has on game day and Audie Cole is the latest example.

In a curious move, just prior to Thursday night’s matchup against Washington, the Vikings decided to waive their young linebacker and promote offensive tackle Kevin Murphy from the practice squad.  With Phil Loadholt missing time, and Charlie Johnson also out, I can see the sense in needing more depth up front.  Still, making Cole the casualty just doesn’t seem to add up.

Tonight’s inactives are:  Cornerback Chris Cook, right tackle Phil Loadholt, guard Charlie Johnson, safety Jamarca Sanford, running back Matt Asiata, tight end Kyle Rudolph, and defensive tackle Fred Evans.

Surprisingly LeTroy Guion, who was listed as “doubtful,” is active for tonight’s game.  He will not start, however, and rookie Sharrif Floyd will be filling in.

Please make sure you join us in our VT Chat Room to discuss tonight’s action, including a Hall of Fame ring presentation for Cris Carter, with all the Vikings fans that hang out in these parts.

  • Yeah, that's a little disappointing. I was back in Minnesota visiting my sweet old parents and my personal highlight was Audie with the double pick six against the Bills (sorry Mom)

  • good, entertaining game tonight, even though we won, err, yaayy, we won! a night game win - what?

great to see K-Will have a great game, or half anyways. D responded to coach's challenging them at halftime, and coaches responded to player's challenging them a few days ago by keeping our pass rushers attacking at the end of the game (still thought they'd tie it up)

with ponder now hurt and extra time before our next game, it's set up perfectly to start freeman for his second chance

washington sux. we still suck. we still need to tank for teddy. crap. hope the bucs and jags can win a few this year

  • Entertaining win but still sloppy and lucky. Frazier is a great leader but probably the worst coach I've ever seen, Mike Tice included. We need all new coaches and to draft Manziel this offseason.

Adam, Brett do you think there's any chance Saban would leave Bama? I could see him as Belicheck 2.0 if we could lure him out.

    • Nick Saban is not cut out to be an NFL coach. I don't want him anywhere near this team.

      • Agree Saban is probably not coming here, but I think Manziel Will be the best qb in this class

  • They will probably be able to bring Audie right back if they want. I think it's unlikely anyone will claim him this late in the week unless they are real intrigued, and we're talking about a guy who was a 7th round draft pick and has made no regular season appearances on defense. I'm actually more bummed about losing Dawkins off the practice squad to the Cowboys. I thought he had a chance to develope into a nice backup DT.

  • Goodness, what is all the flap about Frazier calling those timeouts? Don't people realize that time was NOT an issue for the Redskins? Thanks goodness Frazier has the ability to remain calm and think about the fact that it will be downs that will stop the Redskins, not time. It's as though people's brains (including Greg Jennings) go into a hyper state when the clock gets below 1:30. You know that kneel down that we did to end the game? That would have been time to come back for a winning FG if the Redskins had scored. Well done, Leslie.

Meanwhile, kudos to the Vikings defense for their increased aggressiveness in the second half. DB's on the line of scrimmage, full blitz packages, crossing routes covered... it was as though we had turned to a different game. Draft pick be damned, nice win, Vikes, and nice game Ponder.
