Post-Thrashing Injury Updates, Bishop Out For Season

By Brett Anderson

As is getting destroyed at home by the 1-3 Carolina Panthers didn’t hurt enough, the real salt in the wound was three substantial injuries to defensive players.

Desmond Bishop suffered a knee injury in the second quarter of Sunday’s game against the Panthers. Despite being to limp off the field, the Vikings announced today that Bishop’s season has come to an end with a torn ACL in the right knee. The game against Carolina was Bishop’s first and last start of the season. Bishop, who struggled to get on the field at linebacker despite it being one of the Vikings [many] weaknesses likely means it was his last game in Minnesota. Desmond Bishop, 29, was only signed to a one-year deal and will be a free agent after 2013.

Harrison Smith, one of the few Vikings defensive players who has been very impressive this season, is now dealing with a turf toe injury. Smith is scheduled to have an MRI to determine the severity of the injury.

Finally, rookie Xavier Rhodes also suffered an injury that removed him from Sunday’s contest. Rhodes sprained his ankle while defending an incomplete pass deep to Ted Ginn Jr. in the second quarter. Although he returned to the game for a short period, he did not play in the second half. Rhodes is also scheduled for an MRI to determine how much time, if any, he will miss. When asked about the injury, Rhodes said “Nothing that can hold me back.”

The Vikings defense, now riddled with more injuries, has already allowed 418 yards per game (the second worst in the NFL) and 31.6 points per game (the third worst in the NFL).

  • Smith's turf toe has me most concerned. Those things can really linger. Sounds like Rhodes will be ok. I feel sorry for Bishop, he worked his butt off to get back and be the starter and now this. Best wishes to him on his recovery.

    • Johnny,
I really felt bad for Bishop also... Plus Smith with turf toe unreal... This is going to be one of them years.
Really would like to know what the Wilfs are thinking...

  • It appears you have missed one line item from the injury report. Not to worry, your old Pal Freds did a cut and paste from the Vikings.com web site for you:

"Josh Robinson is questionable for Monday's contest with the Giants. Mr. Robinson is suffering from 3rd degree burns on his ass from repeatedly being scorched in the game against the Panthers. He also has all the symptoms associated with CSD (constantly sucking disease), crossed eyes, sore neck and missing jock strap."

Here it is Tuesday and old Freds is still a bit cranky.

    • I guess so. You are a seasoned vet on all things Viking so none of this should surprise you. It's just the Vikings being the Vikings and no shocker for me. It's not our first rodeo Freds but yeah this crap is getting old.

  • When asked about the injury, Rhodes said “Nothing that can hold me back.”

    Well, nothing except injury.
    And bad schemes.
    And taking horrible angles.
    And back tackling form.

But other than that, I agree.

    • Don't forget about the sun being in his eyes. That sun can get pretty bright in the dome.

  • let's send jerry kill over to musgrave's home and see if kill can spread around some seizure germs, it's contagious, isn't it?
