Vikes To Coach Senior Bowl Squad?

By Adam Warwas

Here is an interesting tidbit buried in a recent article over at 1500ESPN:

While no official announcement has been made yet, Leslie Frazier is apparently convinced that he and his staff will be coaching one of the teams at this year’s Senior Bowl, an annual event held in Mobile, Alabama that draws just about every scout, coach, and personnel guy in the business.

The game will be played on January 23rd, so it is highly likely that any coaching changes will be made prior to that date to ensure Frazier’s real staff of the future are the ones taking advantage of an up-close look at these prospects.

Frazier is so certain the Vikings will be coaching one of the two teams that he asked offensive line coach Jeff Davidson to postpone his scheduled hip replacement until after the Senior Bowl.

  • On a roll today eh Adam? I have a question, what are the criteria for picking the coaching staff for the senior bowl? Why would the coaching staff from a 3-13 team get that honor? Is it one of those things like the draft where the worst teams get the highest picks?

    • I'm not sure, Johnny, that there is much rhyme or reason to who gets to coach. The official site of the Senior Bowl offers this as their only explanation: "Coaching staffs for the contest are determined by the NFL office."

      • One of those unsolved mysteries I guess Adam. Luck of the draw perhaps? Alot of behind the scenes crappola going on is my guess.

        • Yeah, can't say for sure. I looked over the list of the previous years and couldn't really determine much, other than it seems to be teams with bad records and newish coaches more often than not. Probably some secret formula similar to the one used for Comp picks.

        • Actually johnny, I serve on a committee of former coaches who make this decision on an ice fishing trip in mid-December. Most of the others drink, so by midnight I pretty much have the say in who the coaches will be. This is the first Viking coach in some time that I have wanted to see get the job, so when the time was right, I played my Hall of Fame card and got Leslie in. Besides, I felt we needed all the scouting edge we could get for the upcoming draft.

  • Just have to make a quick shout out. Go NDSU BISON!!!!! NDSU plays for the FCS national championship on sat. at noon central on ESPN2.
    GO BISON!!!!!

    • That's great Coach, somehow I knew you had something to do with it. At least I'll watch the game now, can't recall ever watching one before. So Coach what's your take on the Speilman promotion?

      • I guess I'm OK with it, johnny. At least we have recognized the need for having a person in charge, I think that has been needed. The organization should have never allowed Chili to go "all in" with Favre while at the same time ignoring the future and the Oline. Whether or not it should be Spielman, I guess only time will tell, and I sure hope he and Denzel have a good working relationship. Not sure what role Rick had in hiring Leslie.

        • Coach, from what I've read Speilman and Denzel seem to have mutual respect for each other but you never know. Do you think Singletary will be back? From what I've read he doesnt seem very interested in what's going on but he is a close friend to Denzel.

          • Singletary was probably a great teammate on a Super Bowl team, johnny, but he is a freak show for a coach. Bugged out eyes can only take a team so far. Mike was never considered the most cerebral linebacker in the NFL, and I can easily see him getting out-coached in the NFL. Leslie probably thought he would bring a little attitude to this bunch, but first and foremost, you gotta know what's going on. I sure hope he doesn't return.

          • Totally agree Coach, was just hoping I didnt miss something. I was for the hire and also hoped he would bring a little attitude to this bunch but Greenway really took a step back under his leadership and ya Mike needs to go. I've seen people say he should be the new DC, yikes!!!

      • Coach, I think you would like the BISON a lot more. The Bison play football the right way. Line up and ram it down their throats offence. Big fast o-line. 2 great running backs. And play great defense. None of that fancy trick play stuff.
