What Does Fred Evans Signing Mean?

By Adam Warwas

Brett clued you all in on Friday that nose tackle Fred Evans re-upped with the Vikings on a two year contract.  Given that Evans plays the nose position, and the team also has Letroy Guion and Remi Ayodele in the fold, it seems like the Vikings suddenly have an abundance of nose tackles that have underperformed as of late.

The dollar amounts of the Evans deal are not yet know, but I have seen quite a few waves of speculation around the net, so I thought I would take a look at each one of them:

Kevin Williams is on the trading block:  I highly doubt there is much to this.  At least, if the Vikings planned on trading Williams, I don’t think the presence of Fred Evans would have an impact on that decision one way or the other.

Remi Ayodele is on his way out:  This could be possible.  Ayodele is paid much higher than his production warrants.  His assumed involvement in the Saints bounty scandal has made him the second most disliked Viking on the roster… after Chris Cook.

It Means Nothing:  It wouldn’t be a total shock if Evans took a very minimal deal to return to the Vikings and his presence means nothing more than that he will really have to battle during training camp to make this roster.

  • Erin Henderson does not sound happy:

Free agent WLB Erin Henderson says the Vikings have yet to make him an offer.
"Whats crazy is I'm not even asking for big money," Henderson said. "All I want is respectable money for what I'm asked to do." Two NFL sources have told 1500 ESPN Twin Cities the Vikings have "made clear" they want to re-sign Henderson, but they're apparently waiting for his price to go down. According to Henderson, it won't. "I've watched every single one of my games from last (year) 10 (times) over. I know what I'm worth."

  • if u were erin would you be happy? I dont think so....so they wanna screw him over? wats wrong with a reasonable contract? there over paying all the other palyers to come in who havent even played in the last year...id like him to stay but if i was him id sign somewhere else as far away from this spielman freakshow as possible

  • this Erin Henderson situation is kinda shaping up to be a possible source of discontentment. his bro, EJ, was a good player and made for a good comeback story after a gruesome injury, and he was a good teammate, and now Erin's doing pretty good, so do we really want to pizz him off and keep him? how much dough are we gonna save on him to sacrifice locker room chemistry? is there a purpose to letting him stew, are they trying to send a message?
