Good Old Fashioned Irresponsible Speculation: Trade Deadline

By Adam Warwas

The NFL extended the NFL trade deadline to Thursday due to Hurricane Sandy shutting down the league offices, so we got a bonus two days of speculation that will almost certainly end up being anticlimactic.

Leslie Frazier somewhat fueled the fire on Wednesday, however, when he was asked about the open roster spot resulting from Chris Cook’s injury status.

“Without giving too much away, the trade deadline is Thursday, so you want to do everything you can,” Frazier said. “I know Rick (Spielman) and our personnel department is doing everything we can to improve our team and help our team be better. You want to exhaust all avenues in doing that.”

It is suspicious that the Vikings have yet to fill Cook’s spot but it is unlikely that the Vikings make any major moves on Thursday.  Still, speculation is fun, so let’s do some of that:

Michael Vick:  Some have brought this idea up.  I won’t.

Tim Tebow:  See: “Michael Vick.”

Steve SmithPro Football Talk started this one off by suggesting the Panthers receiver could be an answer to the Vikings passing woes.  I don’t buy it.  Tell me where an aging receiver with questionable leadership abilities fits into a rebuilding roster.

Dwayne Bowe:  The player makes great sense.  The draft pick compensation and subsequent contract extension probably wouldn’t.

Ramses Barden:  This one is an Adam Warwas special.  Tremendous potential (with low mileage) that has been stuck behind Hakeem Nicks, Mario Manningham, and Victor Cruz in recent years.  At 6’ 6” and 224 pounds, Barden could possibly be pried away from a Giants team that seems to view him as more of a luxury than a necessity and lend the Vikings deep game a helping hand.

Toby Gerhart:  Sell?  That’s right, I said it.  The Vikings have gradually been taking more and more of the load away from Gerhart and there are a number of teams hungry for running backs right now.  The market is flooded with aging and expensive veteran backs, so perhaps Gerhart would represent a more attractive option to certain teams.

Okay, what off-the-wall speculation do you guys have for me?  Only a few more hours to throw something out there!

  • I got a real sexy one for you....they're going to bring Reisner up to the active roster because Carlson hasn't passed his concussion test. I like your last two, but Barden is a free agent after this year so if I'm the Vikings I'm not giving up much of anything now for a player I can get for free (except for a phat contract of course) in three months...and if I'm the Giants, I'm not trading him unless the compensation coming back to me is better than the compensation pick I'll get for losing him in the 2014 draft. With all the injuries that team seems to suffer it would be smarter to keep him around for depth this year. That's a great player to target though, and if they did want to ship him out we have a couple extra mid-rounders from trades during last years draft that could be used. As for Toby, if anyone did call I'ld sure listen. He's got another year left but barring another devastating injury to AP he's never going to get more than a few touches a game and will leave when his contract is up.

  • Time - a concept invented by man, perfected by science

Time for SpeilMullen to admit his mistakes.
Time for Frazier to bow down to superior logic
Time for Musgrave to alter his simple minded approach
Time to set aside past mistakes and old grievances
Time for Zygi to empty the vault
Time to call upon an immortal Viking from the past

Yes Viking Fans .........It's Dugan Time!

Our favorite hunk of man meat has been admirably toiling away, bettering mankind. This is a tough call as there are innumerable causes that would benefit from Dugan's services. (It's rumored his manly musk invoked fear in Brad Pitt which, in turn, caused him to make those silly Channel commercials). The Vikings are more important. Hire Dugan Now!

  • Barden really works for me. His size and strength and ability remind me of a vincent jackson/Andre Johnson type. His preseason and start of the year looked really good.
Not a whole lot to play with out there in the WR catagory. Bowe would be a nice fit.
One thing for sure, I'm not a fan of Johnson or Sully on our O-line. Got to give Ponder more than Two seconds to find someone open or to run. Sully is just too small and not strong at the point of Attack. improvement on the line esp the middle will help a ton. Kalil has been an awsome addtion. Make you want more dominance at the line.

  • wait and draft 2 WRs and 2 guards, hope we get at least one of each that can play. stay with ponder for now, develop MBT, and do something more with webb. keep and accumulate picks, trades and FAs are a luxury we can't afford right now, and we just changed to real GM mode, let's stick with it and see if ricky can have two good drafts in a row. the way AP runs, we need a decent backup RB, but if we got a real good offer for gearhead, take it
