Links Of The Week: Getting Closer To Draft Time

April 8, 2013, by Adam Warwas 9 comments

You know the drill, here is the best of the best:

  • Some Hack Blogger tried to predict five guys the Vikings will target in a couple of weeks.
  • I’ve been making the case for a new punter all offseason, most recently profiling LSU punter Brad Wing, and it appears that the Vikings had him in for a workout.
  • Alabama offensive tackle D.J. Fluker reportedly visited Winter Park last week, and it just might have been to see how he performs lining up at guard.
  • There are a number of reasons the Vikings should consider quarterback Geno Smith if he, somehow, begins to slide on Draft Day.
  • If the need at middle linebacker wasn’t so painfully obvious then Leslie Frazier’s recent comments might feel like a smokescreen.
  • An in-depth look at how this year’s middle linebackers stack up.
  • Some prospect names have surfaced regarding private visits to Winter Park.
  • Receivers coach George Stewart recently had some very nice things to say about USC wide out Robert Woods.
  • The Minnesota Legislature seems to think they can solve their stadium funding problems.
  • A sneak peak at the Vikings new uniforms indicates that there might be a little less yellow and a little more gold.
  • Everson Griffen is using his new baby as motivation for building on his best pro season.
  • Leslie Frazier still appears to want Antoine Winfield back and he wants everyone to know it.
  • A look at why Seattle should now be considered Minnesota-West.

Links Of The Week: Draft Month Is Here

March 31, 2013, by Adam Warwas 11 comments

Alright, what better way to catch up on the news and kick off Draft Month than to send you towards all of the best articles across the internet?  Enjoy!

  • Don’t forget to bookmark our Giveaway Page so you can enter our raffle for Amazon gift cards every day between now and the Draft!
  • Christian Ponder has been chosen for an unique opportunity in the technology world.
  • The father of Mike Wallace claims that his son turned down a larger offer from Minnesota than what he signed for in Miami.  His loss, our gain, as far as I am concerned (if there is a shred of truth to it).
  • Antoine Winfield has yet to sign elsewhere, and rumor has it the Vikings could still be in the mix, which makes Vikings fans very hopeful that he sees at least one more year of action as a Viking.
  • Michael Jenkins was too expensive for the Vikings to keep this year, but he recently landed in New England under a new deal.
  • Cornerback Jamar Taylor, out of Boise State, could be a name to keep an eye on this month.
  • Antoine Winfield may not be the best NFL corner when it comes to covering the best NFL wide out, but he is still one of the best for a number of reasons.
  • There has been a lot of talk lately about the Vikings being a candidate to trade up in the first round.
  • One NFL Draft “expert” has the Vikings taking a defensive end this year.
  • Stadium designs haven’t even been released yet, but that hasn’t prevented fingers from being pointed already.
  • A closer look at the new “crown of the helmet” rule that has been implemented.
  • The Vikings have sent some of their (fighting) Irish players to Ireland to promote next season’s game in London.
  • The new Vikings stadium has to live up to some high expectations when it comes to their food and beverage vendors.
  • Wide out is a position of need, but it is expected to soon be a position of strength, as the Vikings must get more quality talent before opening day.
  • Antoine Winfield has reportedly put the “pain” of being released by the Vikings behind him as he decides where to play next year.
  • The Vikings Draft Party is shaping up to be quite the fun event.
  • When fullback Ryan D’Imperio got signed by the Chiefs you just knew Brad Childress was going to be brought into the fold with some goofy job title.
  • Vikings Hall of Famer Alan Page has written a children’s book.
  • And, here it is, your moment of Zen:

Links Of The Week: First Wave Of Free Agency Is Over

March 21, 2013, by Adam Warwas 26 comments

Well, the first wave of free agency has come and gone, and there were some fireworks involving our favorite team.  Percy Harvin was traded, Antoine Winfield was released, Greg Jennings and Matt Cassel were signed, and a lot of Vikings were retained.  Now it is time to put a nice exclamation point on this first wave as we wade closer into the second, and else edge towards the Draft.

  • There are some positions still in dire need of some work this offseason, with two in particular.
  • Chad Greenway isn’t too concerned about the middle linebacker spot.  He thinks that either Erin Henderson, a rookie, or himself could do well in that capacity.
  • The “crown of the helmet” rule recently instituted is causing some heartache in Vikings Nation.
  • Signing Brian Urlacher would be an out-of-character move for Rick Spielman.
  • It might be too early to judge the Harvin trade, but it isn’t too early to try.
  • A look at some of the linebacker options in this Draft class that aren’t named Manti Te’o.
  • A look at the finalized picks the Vikings have going into April’s Draft.
  • The Vikings do not plan to use Joe Webb at any other position than quarterback.
  • Another look at the production the Vikings got from their 2012 rookie class.
  • Part of the reason the Vikings were able to overpay for Phil Loadholt was because his teammates were vocal about the Vikings needing to retain him.
  • The door has yet to completely shut on the possibility of Antoine Winfield returning to the Vikings.
  • On Thursday, #28 turned 28.  Happy Birthday!
  • Some interesting notes about the Percy Harvin saga that ended in the trade with Seattle.
  • The league approved the $200 million loan to the Vikings for their new stadium.
  • The Vikings aren’t likely to go after Brian Urlacher unless he drops his asking price.
  • More and more NFL teams are moving to the 3-4 defense, which could help the Vikings find talent that fits their defensive scheme.
  • And, here it is, your moment of Zen:

Vikings Stadium Funding Not Going As Planned

March 2, 2013, by Adam Warwas 1 comment

One year and one day ago, the Minnesota Vikings were in the middle of a battle to secure funding for their new stadium, and gambling was proposed as the best way to get it.

Despite never ever wanting to see the Vikings leave Minnesota I penned an article entitled “Weigh The Gambling Option Carefully, Minnesota” where I discussed the historical gap between gambling revenues promised for such projects and what the actual numbers end up being.

If a person is too poor to buy that new Silverado,” I said in closing the article, “there isn’t a financial adviser in the world that would advise that person to head to the casino to raise funds for the vehicle.  Perhaps, if the tax revenue isn’t there and a $323 million surplus is already spent, then the State should consider not placing such a risky bet… with your money.”

As it turns out, it was decided that the public money supporting the stadium project would be raised in large part by gambling, the most volatile of all possible funding mechanisms and things are not off to a good start.

The revenue generated to date is far below what was projected.  According to 1500 ESPN, as of February 1st only 130 sites were offering the electronic pulltabs devised to fund the stadium, and it was projected to be up to 900 by this time.  Furthermore, those sites are generating significantly less revenue on a daily basis than was projected, causing estimates to drop from $206 a day to $100.

As of right now, the stadium project is costing more than the State is bringing in.

Governor Mark Dayton and other lawmakers are concerned about this issue, but many see little reason to panic, claiming the games simply need to be marketed better and need more time to gain attention.

Dayton could find himself in an interesting position, as the champion of the Vikings stadium project and gambling revenue source, as he may need to search for an alternative funding source for the stadium if things continue to unfold this way.

One of those sources of revenue, and perhaps the most likely  could end up being the Personal Seat Licenses that he so staunchly opposed not that long ago.

Links of the Week: A Fresh Batch Of Stale News

February 21, 2013, by Adam Warwas 7 comments

As a small blog, we try but struggle to “keep up with the Joneses” when it comes to reporting every little thing within moments of somebody saying or doing something newsworthy.  We just don’t have the resources that many of the bigger outlets have, so we try to make up for it with character.

This week, however, I can honestly say that it has been a really long time since I have been quite so disappointed with these larger newsies and beat writers.  They just keep on regurgitating old news, particularly about Percy Harvin, and half-assedly making it look like they are adding something new to the conversation.

They aren’t.

With that being said, some of this stale “news” is making it’s way into today’s Links segment, but we are trying to send you towards the best, more innovative stories that we can find:

  • For some reason Adrian Peterson would like to see Dwight Freeney join the Vikings.  Another high priced, aging defensive end anybody?
  • When it comes to Percy Harvin, Rick Spielman is saying the same exact thing he has been saying all along.  But, he said it again so, therefore, it is news.  Again.
  • At the Combine Spielman talked up a number of receiver prospects while tossing some light criticism towards Christian Ponder and Manti Te’o.
  • An examination of whether it should be Cris Carter or Randy Moss that is connsidered the best Vikings receiver of all time.
  • Mortenson Construction has been awarded the bid for construction of the Vikings new stadium.
  • This is officially going to be the last season the Minnesota Vikings play in the Metrodome.
  • Former Viking Husain Abdullah has signed with the Chiefs after a year off of football.
  • One of the better Harvin articles to be posted this week, without a doubt.
  • Ponder threw the deep ball less than any quarterback in 2012, but that can’t continue into next season.
  • Combine rumors are already making the rounds in Indy, and one of them is connecting quarterback Drew Stanton to the Vikings.  I was not kind to Stanton in my free agency rankings.
  • On offense, all eyes will be on the wide receivers during this week’s Combine for Vikings fans.
  • As already discussed, the Vikings are expected to be very healthy this offseason, despite a few surgeries being needed after 2012.
  • Spielman says he doesn’t plan to spend big during free agency again this year.
  • The Pioneer Press stooped to a new low by following Harvin to his Florida home, getting a “no comment” answer from him, and then acting like they broke the biggest story since Watergate.
  • The NFL released a tentative Draft order and the Vikings do now have nine picks, which was in question earlier this offseason.
  • And, here it is, your moment of Zen:

(Late) Links Of The Week: Rams Up Next

December 15, 2012, by Adam Warwas 1 comment

I’m a little late getting this week’s Links segment kicked out to you all, but there are still plenty of great articles to point you towards as you wait for tomorrow’s kickoff.  Read them, tell the author what you think, and tell them who sent you:

  • The Vikings passing offense is going to be a main sticking point in almost every game preview from here on out.
  • Allen the Entertainer went on Jim Rome’s new show and had quite the fun time blasting recent changes to the game of football.
  • When building this Vikings team the front office has to be aware that they will most likely be playing their home games outdoors for two years.
  • Anyone that still clings to the idea that the NFL is not a quarterback driven league need not look much further than the 2012 Minnesota Vikings.
  • Here is a dream that just seems incredibly too pleasant to ever come true.
  • Chris Kluwe got fined for his uniform infraction on Sunday, and his special teams coach has just about had it with his punter.
  • I found a Bill Musgrave supporter!  Take that Sasquatch hunters!
  • Todd McShay put down the self-tanner long enough to release his first mock draft and he has the Vikings using their pick on a defensive tackle with the last name “Williams.”  That has worked well for us in the past.
  • A.J. Jefferson’s concussion last Sunday shouldn’t hold him out this week, but he was plenty scared following the injury.
  • Scroll down past the game recap (unless you want to read it, of course) to the table that compares Christian Ponder to Tarvaris Jackson.  Then, drink heavily.
  • Bill Musgrave says that Christian Ponder’s footwork “needs to be more refined.”  He also contends that books have pages and that cows say “moo.”
  • Leslie Frazier has told defensive end D’Aundre Reed, who hasn’t been active for two weeks, to be patient.
  • The question of whether or not Minnesota can afford their new Vikings stadium is not yet answered, and won’t be for a long time.
  • How this offseason goes for free agents Dwight Freeney and Osi Umeniyora could tell us a lot about Jared Allen’s potential future, or lack thereof, in Minnesota.
  • Some really fun conceptual pictures of the future stadium in Mineapolis.
  • Jerome Felton has been a very solid fullback paving the way for Adrian Peterson, but rookie Rhett Ellison might be even better in that area.
  • Everson Griffen avoided a fine for his hit high on Jay Cutler last week.
  • Bryant McKinnie used to look like an All Pro against lesser talents while looking like a clown against the better pass rushers in the NFL.  Rookie Matt Kalil, however, looks like an All Pro no matter who lines up across from him.
  • A lot weird things can happen on any given Sunday, but Vikes Geek points out three things that he considers to be ludicrous from last week.
  • Rookies Harrison Smith and Josh Robinson have proved to be just what the doctor ordered for an annually disappointing Vikings secondary.
  • Don’t click this link unless you are prepared to buy yourself the greatest Christmas present ever.

Links Of The Bye Week

November 15, 2012, by Adam Warwas 12 comments

Coming off of a big win, the Vikings bye week has not been completely quiet, and I have plenty of great reads to share with you:

  • Our friends at TC Huddle recently had a sit-down with Chad Greenway.  I’ve listed this one first for a reason… read it!
  • Governor Mark Dayton has some strong opinions about PSL’s, but some believe his threats are completely empty.
  • The Vikings are the last NFC North team to have their bye week, but they are still the least penalized within the division.
  • Is Adrian Peterson in the middle of his best NFL season?
  • Ok, read what I wrote three weeks ago… then read this letter from a concerned dad.  I don’t think him and I see eye to eye.  Sorry, Dad.
  • Chris Kluwe’s transformation into a celebrity just never seems to end.
  • Rick Spielman talked a lot about a lot of subjects during the bye week.
  • The Vikings aren’t playing this week, but here are some ideas for who to cheer for (or against) this weekend.
  • On this list, putting Percy Harvin in the “Other” category is simply stupid.
  • Want to know more about Christian Ponder’s gal?  Of course you do.
  • Against the Lions Kyle Rudolph shined while Harrison Smith struggled.
  • Former Viking Ray Edwards is no longer a wanted man.
  • Gil takes a close look at a 2013 prospect that could very well end up a Viking next year.
  • Adrian Peterson and Peyton Manning are two obvious choices for Comeback Player of the Year.
  • Some people are sold on Christian Ponder, while some aren’t.
  • For being a rebuilding team, the Vikings sure do have a lot of elite players.
