Larry Fitzgerald Could Help the Minnesota Vikings

By Joe Johnson

For the last few off-season’s, Minnesota Viking fans have pondered about the possibility of Minnesota legend Larry Fitzgerald joining the purple. Fitzgerald, who is in the latter part of his NFL career is currently a free agent. Cardinal’s GM Steve Keim has made it clear, that if Fitzgerald wants to continue to play, there is a spot for him in Arizona.

Keim went on to say the following during an interview on SiriusXM Radio:

“Leave it up to him. I think he’s earned that right and if he tells us at some point that he’s ready to go, we’ll have a spot for him.”

So, the real question would be, is Larry Fitzgerald actually going to play this year? The wide receiver does turn 38 years old in August and has played in many games as an NFL veteran. It is not out of the realm of possibility that Fitzgerald decides to call it quits and retire in the coming months.

Would He Be Willing to Come to Minnesota?

Fitzgerald is a Minnesota native and was born and raised in Minneapolis. His family still resides in Minnesota, so the possibility of him wanting to finish his career in Minnesota isn’t quite out of the question. Fitzgerald would join a wide receiving core of Adam Thielen, and Justin Jefferson. The depth behind those two is pretty slim, so to add a veteran like Fitzgerald would be a solid move from an organization that loves to add veterans who bring exceptional leadership.

With the NFC North wide open as ever, Fitzgerald could join a squad who could be the favorites to win the NFC North for the 2021 season. It’s not like the 16-year veteran would have to fight for playing time either. He could fill right in as the team’s third option behind Thielen and Jefferson. Jefferson would be the main person who benefits from playing alongside two Minnesota legends. Jefferson would be able to soak in all the tips and tricks Fitzgerald has to offer. It’s a win-win situation for both parties involved.

Does Fitzgerald Have Anything Left in the Tank?

Playing 17 years in the NFL as a successful wide receiver is almost unheard of. But Fitzgerald has done it effortlessly. Fitzgerald hasn’t had a 1000 yard season since 2017, but that doesn’t mean he is done being a formidable pass catcher. Last season, Fitzgerald still caught 54 receptions, even playing behind Deandre Hopkins and Christian Kirk. This coming season, Arizona has already added AJ Green and rookie Rondale Moore to the equation. So, if Fitzgerald wants an opportunity to make a difference, Minnesota might be his place to do it.

  • I'd love it, but my impression is that he has never evinced an interest in finishing his career in Minnesota. Frankly, playing out of state his entire career has probably made it easier for him and his family to live in Minnesota (who the hell cares about the Cardinals?).

  • Larry Fitzgerald is one of the very best, if not the greatest receiver that I’ve ever seen...many Viking fans have always wanted him in purple...he would be a tremendous addition for this team...he’s right there for the taking and affordable.....this could be a special year...GET LARRY!!!!!!!
