Vikings Will Have First Female Announcer for a Regular Season Broadcast TV Game

By Kirby O'Connor

The Minnesota Vikings play the Jacksonville Jaguars this Sunday in what could be an extremely boring, if it goes to plan, game. However, history will be made one way or another. Beth Mowins will be the first female announcer to call a regular season Vikings game on broadcast television.

The Vikings have had a female announcer’s crew for their game in 2018 versus the Los Angeles Rams, however that was only for the broadcast of the game on Amazon Prime. The difference is significant as the number of people who stream a game through Amazon Prime versus those who watch the game over broadcast television is huge.

Mowins has covered NFL games as a broadcaster since 2015 when she first covered Oakland (now Las Vegas) Raiders preseason games as a play-by-play announcer. She also was the first female to call a Monday Night Football game, Week one of 2017 when the Chargers faced the Broncos, which in turn made her the first woman to call a nationally televised NFL game.

She has called College Basketball on CBS, the NBA on CBS, and she was the first female to call a game for the NFL on CBS. The Vikings game will be broadcast on CBS this Sunday, and I for one am looking forward to a fresh, new voice and an escape from Johnathan Vilma.

  • I remember the ‘17 Broncos game from my time in Denver, was hoping her monotone voice wouldn’t have to be heard again after that horribly announced game that was widely criticized. Why are we subjecting ourselves to this? CBS, STOP the virtue signaling and put the announcers on that represent the traditional voices of football.

  • Hard to listen to her. Had to change the channel. Women should not be doing men's sports. Sick of it

    • I was not exactly sure what i was listening too when i first heard the announcing. My mind told me it was a man just cause it is uncommon to have a woman. Than i believed it could be either a man or a woman cause of the voice. So i had to google it cause it was just not working for me and had to see what this guy looked like. Boy was i surprised. haha. I just changed it. I just enjoy listening to the game from a person that has front line experience and knows what its like to be on that field. Some of them are not that great at it but at least its coming from experience, not reading a piece of paper. But today its about pleasing everyone. So by next year we should have a transgender announcing. (i have nothing against them) just making a point. And it is as simple as tuning out of the game if were not enjoying it. We are all entitled to our own opinions and that is all they are.

  • Gayle Sierens called the Seahawks-Chiefs game on NBC on 12/27/1987, the first woman play-by-play network announcer of an NFL game. What took the Vikings so long?

  • Beth needs to stop talking. There is nothing but her monotone voice nonstop. Let us just watch the game!

  • Shes aweful!! Cant call a game! "Their going for it" REALLY it was first down!! You cant hear her either, sounds like she has a mouth full! Atleast now Joe Buck and Aikman arent the worst in NFL.

  • Beth Mowins is the worst sports anyone can have. Her monotone voice is aweful. She muddles her words and you cannot even understand what she is saying. Makes me want to walk out of the room and/or turn the sound off and watch the game. Whatever you do DO NOT EVER, EVER HAVE HER BACK!

  • She is so untalented and unlistenable. It’d be better with dead air. She SUCKS.

    • My wife walked in and asked, "What is that?!" I told her and she laughed and wanted to know if the PC woke folks are going to totally destroy the NFL.

Yes. They are intent on doing so.

  • Can't stand her. ESPN and the Big 10 ruined lots of games by using her. Second I heard her voice today I switched to the Lions-Bears on FOX.
