REPORT: Vikings Trading To Acquire Mike Wallace

By Adam Warwas

This is a developing story, and we know how those have gone so far this offseason, but here goes…

The Vikings have reportedly traded a fifth round pick to the Miami Dolphins to acquire disgruntled wide out Mike Wallace and a seventh round draft pick.

Wallace, along with defensive end Michael Johnson, was a recent top target of Rick Spielman’s as an unrestricted free agent. When he decided to sign with Miami instead, some rumors swirled around that he turned down more money from Minnesota and was dubious about playing in the cold.

Wallace is now 28 years old and owed $9,85 million in 2015 as part of a contract that runs through year 2017. His play in Miami was largely disappointing, but he is a deep threat in Norv Turner’s offense now, and clearly the Vikings feel strongly about his capabilities.

The draft pick compensation is certainly reasonable, but his contract status is what will determine the true value in this trade. If Spielman got him for such a low bounty and talked him into a pay cut, then this could be a really good deal.

Still, the perception is that Wallace is a diva wide out that has a possible attitude problem, and Vikings fans aren’t going to be excited if that shows up on a Sunday anytime soon.

Be sure to check back in as facts, quotes, and clarity become available regarding this developing story.

  • WHY?!!Why trade for a multi million dollar cancer? This is a deep draft full of wr's who would give their right nut to be drafted!1 or 2 of the top wr's in the draft will fall to the Vikes.Devin Smith,Sammie Coates,Phillip Dorsett may be at no.2.Not smart imo.

  • I love it, 10 TD's last year with a qb who imo is not as good as Bridgewater, and an offensive coordinator not as experienced and creative as Norv? I think good things are going to happen for the Vikings and Mike Wallace in the future.
Now does this means we're drafting either Waynes or Scherff? I'll really be on one if we get Waynes.

  • Yeah, I don't want, and this team doesn't need a WR with an attitude. Especially with a young QB...maybe Jennings helps in that department, but....I think I'd rather have an experienced LG and a young WR with something to prove. Looks like Ricky didn't see it that way, hope he's right.

    • Who knows maybe draft Cooper and trade Patterson for a LG. I don't like Wallace but I trust in slick Rick.

      • What exactly about Spielman makes him "Slick Rick" and what is it that he has done to earn your trust?

        Ponder? Kalil? Patterson?

  • Doesn't make sense. I think paying a LG that kind of money would help Teddy more than this guy.

    • I agree but Iapati wasnt the answer and Boling choose to stay in Cincinnati. A trade for Mankins would have been interesting

  • Im good with the trade it will probably help us land Michael Johnson due to a talented squad we are putting together and the same thing for a left guard if perhaps anybody cuts one worth looking into we needed to make a splash and we just went into the deep end and all we really gave up to get it was Matt Cassel

  • I wonder if Spellman felt he needed an appetizer last night at dinner and nothing else was available on the menu, either way it seems out of character for our mgmt, I wonder if Zim was on board with this one? May they'll cut him if things don't go well and see the 5th to the 7th as a- we had to do something price for Johnson? Maybe Rick promised a reluctant Zimmer defensive choices with our early picks in exchange for his acquiesce? Wallace had better see this as his last chance to stay in the upper echelon of his position, if not, the signpost up ahead - one year deal to "prove himself" maybe two year at 4 million--(see Trent Richardson) For now I see all the trouble of a Randy Moss without the transcendent talent on a squad with a young QB developing the confidence to assert himself. Didn't Carolina let their best player, Steve Smith, leave in part, so Cam Newton could assume his now proper place as the leader in their huddle?
