Trading Places: Jennings To Miami

By Adam Warwas

On March 13th, the Minnesota Vikings sent a fifth round draft selection to Miami in exchange for deep threat Mike Wallace and a seventh round draft selection. Not long after, they parted ways with veteran receiver Greg Jennings.

On Wednesday, the ramifications of this move came full circle and Jennings reportedly signed with Miami. According to those reports, his deal is for two years and worth up to $8 million, which is a far cry from what he was scheduled to make in Minnesota.

It is also considerably less than the salaries the Vikings are scheduled to pay Wallace over the next three years. According to Over The Cap, Wallace is scheduled to carry cap hit of $9.5 million this season and $11.5 million during his final two years.

Wallace is three years younger than Jennings and certainly possesses more speed, but the move can fairly be described as a gamble when every factor is weighed. One of the most important (but surprisingly under-discussed) storylines for 2015 is just how Wallace will fit into Norv Turner’s offense and how he will gel with quarterback Teddy Bridgewater.

Two offseasons ago, the Vikings tried to acquire Mike Wallace, but ultimately “settled” for Jennings after losing the bid to Miami. These two teams being intertwined by these two receivers is certainly an interesting little wrinkle in recent franchise history.

  • Wallace is only three years younger than Jennings? God that seems weird. I remember Wallace being drafted, because my crazy ass uncle wanted him in the worst way, and that seems like yesterday.

Man, I'm getting old. Not like FRAN OLD, but old.

    • I randomly remembered today that at some point in time I wrote a blurb about Adrian Peterson appearing on an episode of MTV's "Cribs." That thought made me feel old.
