The 5th wide receiver position on the Minnesota Vikings depth chart, and ultimately a spot on the 53 man roster, is up for grabs this preseason. The Vikings signed undrafted free agent wide receivers Kain Colter and Erik Lora this offseason from a deep pass catching 2014 talent pool.

Blanton has the size at 6’1 200 pounds that you look for in versatile defensive back. Mike Zimmer likes length and Blanton certainly has that with 31 1/4 inch arms that he uses extremely well especially when playing the run.

Joe Berger has been a veteran presence on the Minnesota Vikings’ offensive line for 3 seasons. He joined the Vikings in week 2 of the 2011 season after originally being selected by the Carolina Panthers in the 6th round of the 2005 NFL draft. He has appeared in 83 regular season games with 29 starts in his 10 year career with Carolina, Dallas, Miami and Minnesota.

Turner and Wilson will try to shape McKinnon into a dynamic 3rd down and change of pass back to spell Arian Peterson as much as possible. A younger version of Darren Sproles would be the ideal longterm blueprint, however worst case scenario is he contribute on special teams and steals a few snaps in the slot as a poor man’s version of Percy Harvin.

Audie Cole’s first NFL start began with a sack on the very first play of the game against the Greenbay Packers in week 12 of 2013. Cole finished the game with 13 total tackles earning him three more starts before a high ankle sprain sidelined him for the season finale versus the Detroit Lions.

The 6’1 200 lbs special team ace and backup safety started 10 games for the Vikings and finished the season with 84 total tackles ranking 3rd on the team. Not only did he contribute significantly on the defensive side, but Sendejo also played on every special teams squad except for field goals and field goal block units.

Mark Craig of the Startribune doesn’t seem to think the Vikings need to rush things at the running back position. But, with Toby gone and Matt Asiata as the next man up, I’m just a dainty bit concerned. My curiosity as to what GM Rick Spielman might have up his sleeve concerning the backup tailback position has got the best of me for sure. In Craig’s recent article, he shares an interesting quote from Spielman about the possibility of adding another ball carrier.

The trend in the NFL is to feature big tight ends that can be used as a receivers in the vertical passing game. Chase Ford fits that prototypical mold. He is a hard working, pass catching tight end that could be on the verge of a breakout year under Norv Turner.
