Vikings Nopedy Nopes: Jordan Addison Fallout, Randy Moss on J.J. McCarthy, Rookie QB Contract

The nopedy nopes are weekly Minnesota Vikings-themed items that we’re not buying. It’s a spin-off of our rumor mill, and we hope you enjoy. Here is the 19th batch of Vikings nopedy nopes in the series’ history.

The Nopedy Nope: Everyone associated with the Vikings is upset with Jordan Addison for his California arrest a week ago.

This sentiment circulated the internet in the last few days:

Addison’s teammates, though, have defended him this week, citing youth and his need to mature.

“We can do what ifs all day but all you can do is learn at 22 years old. But y’all choose to crucify him instead,” new outside linebacker Jonathan Greenard wrote in response to an Instagram commenter. Greenard also noted, “I’m not incredibly pissed off,” referring to reports that Vikings players and coaches were unhappy with Addison regarding the incident.

And Greenard wasn’t alone. Team captain, safety Josh Metellus, addressed his teammate’s plight while speaking with KSTP’s Darren Wolfson this week. “His mistakes is our mistakes. So, as a leader of the team, I put that on me. I woke up like, ‘Yeah, this is my fault. I gotta lead the young guys in a better direction.’ That’s what the leaders of the team are there for. We the ones that take the brunt of everything. We wear the ‘C’ on our chest for a reason. We got to lead the guys in the right way,” he said.

On the whole, Metellus’ tone was friendly and supportive — not combative or resentful.

“I know, if we’re tough on him, he’s even tougher on himself. He knows he messed up. He knows the situation he put himself in,” Metellus continued. “I was actually just with him in London, spent some quality time with him. He really grew on me as a teammate, as a brother. Outside of football, I’m there for him, leaning on him. Whatever happens, happens. I’m there for him. He’s my brother.”

Addison could be facing a suspension sometime this season, though it’s unclear if alcohol was actually involved in his arrest. Some have claimed marijuana could be the culprit, as no mention of Addison’s BAC was found in the police report.

Metellus concluded, “Obviously, he knows he messed up. I don’t need to be the one to tell him that he messed up. Just trying to be a good teammate for him.”

Some in the Vikings’ front office might be unhappy with Addison, but his teammates are not echoing the sentiment. At all.

Verdict: Nopedy nope.

Speaking with Kay Adams this week, Hall of Famer Randy Moss called on the Vikings to start J.J. McCarthy this season, as early as Week 1.

“My thing is, when we played, the first three guys that drafted — they’re playing. There’s no if, ands, or buts about it. Now, the 5th and 6th Round, we’ll see. May or may not see the field. Maybe a special teamer. First three rounds back then were played,” Moss replied when asked about Darnold or McCarthy in Week 1.

“Now, we’re drafting guys in the 1st Round, and they’re not even seeing the field. To answer your question — I don’t care if he’s not ready. He needs to be out there. Week 1,” Moss continued by endorsing McCarthy.

Moss’ primary quarterback in Minnesota was Daunte Culpepper, and he sat a full year before earning the QB1 job. The assertion was incorrect unless Moss considered Culpeper the exception to the rule.

Verdict: Nopedy nope.

The Nopedy Nope: J.J. McCarthy’s rookie contract situation could’ve ended in a nasty holdout.

This June tweet ignited theories that McCarthy, a rookie, could hold out of his very first professional training camp.

McCarthy’s wanting his signing bonus was accurate, but to suggest the Vikings would just let him walk away from the team or sit on the sidelines all summer was bogus.

This one was a nothingburger from the start. Folks just needed patience.

Verdict: Nopedy nope.
