Packers’ Decision Benefits Vikings

Vikings Will Learn a Lot Sunday before Packers Game Even Begins

The Green Bay Packers drafted their quarterback of the future while Aaron Rodgers was under center, and they just recently paid him. Unfortunately, they waited a bit too long and dealt with a bit too much uncertainty to celebrate.

Packers’ Decision Benefits Vikings

Jordan Love was selected while Aaron Rodgers was still fully entrenched as the Green Bay Packers quarterback. The legend that took over for Brett Favre didn’t like that one bit, and it’s hard to blame him. After sitting behind the future Hall of Famer for some time, Love took over last season as Rodgers moved on to the New York Jets.

In the offseason following his first season as a starter for Green Bay, Jordan Love got paid. No, he didn’t just get paid. He got paid at a level unprecedented across NFL history. Yes, Jordan Love, of all people, did that. Therein lies the problem.

Jordan Love played an incredible nine-game stretch for Green Bay to end the year last season. Before that, in the same season he finally was elevated as the starter, he was mediocre at best across eight weeks to open the season. Splitting either of those samples in half would be calling them small sample sizes. That didn’t stop Green Bay from deciding which one to lean into.

At his best, Love has looked like a top 10-15 quarterback. He is more Kirk Cousins than he is Patrick Mahomes, and it would take another monumental step forward to change that narrative. For Green Bay, that’s the problem. For everyone else, that’s the benefit.

Now strapped to a massive cap hit at the most important position in sports, the Green Bay Packers must get more out of Love. No team can afford a good-not-great quarterback under center without other elite units. The Packers pass catchers are far from elite. The defense is not elite. The running game has been invigorated with Josh Jacobs, but he’s not a significant future answer. Where Green Bay supplements their quarterback remains to be seen.

There’s no denying that Green Bay had to pay Love. There’s no reason for Love not to ask for the moon. Fortunately, for everyone else competing directly with them, the sides came to an agreement set in outer space, and now, every single decision and form of development has to happen at the perfect level. As a chief rival, the Minnesota Vikings can be part of that group.
