Purple Rumor Mill: Trade for a Center, Signing Another QB, Myron Mitchell

The Vikings Have One Tradeable Asset

VikingsTerritory‘s Purple Rumor Mill is a two-day chronicle each week. All the week’s rumors are lassoed and plopped in two spots — articles on Saturday and Sunday — for review. Today is the August 13th edition.

Remember — rumors are rumors. What you read on weekends in these pieces is what the world is talking about pertaining to the Vikings, not necessarily items that will come to fruition.

Rumor: The Vikings are interested in trading for a center if Garrett Bradbury is a final flop.

This rumor is real.

The Vikings also have Chris Reed on the roster to potentially replace Bradbury if he flounders. Of course, the trade speculation does nothing to explain why the team doesn’t sign JC Tretter, one of the best centers in the world who is — you guessed it — a free agent. Perhaps injuries indeed have caught up to Tretter, or his pricetag is too high.

Regardless, the broader takeaway is that Minnesota may not be confident in Bradbury, at least through 2.5 weeks of training camp. And that isn’t good.

Rumor: Kellen Mond and Sean Mannion haven’t inspired awe, so the Vikings will explore another QB2.

Another rumor that appears to have credibility, the Vikings worked out Kevin Hogan a week ago, meaning there is some apparent hesitation about rubberstamping Mond and Mannion at QB2.

Kevin Seifert from ESPN seemed to validate the team’s interest in a fourth quarterback.

Among those available?

  • Blake Bortles
  • Mike Glennon
  • Kevin Hogan
  • Cam Newton
  • Kyle Sloter

It’s late in the process to expect a good-good QB2 waiting on a phone call, aside from Newton.

Rumor: WR Myron Mitchell is on track to make the 53-man roster.

Unsung WR Climbs Vikings 1st Unofficial Depth Chart
Matt Krohn-USA TODAY Sports

Unbelievably, this one is correct.

The Vikings released their first, albeit unofficial, depth chart on Wednesday. And wouldn’t you know it — Myron Mitchell was listed in WR5-WR6 territory. The depth chart writers used a weird tiering system, but one can reasonably glean Mitchell as a regular season WR.

Otherwise, Jalen Nailor or Albert Wilson would’ve been ahead of Mitchell on the chart.

Mitchell was a practice-squader last year, and he might just defy the odds in 2022 to make the 53-man roster. Either that — or the Vikings made a grave typo.
