Two roster spots opened up for the Minnesota Vikings after injuries sent rookies Lewis Cine and Ty Chandler to injured reserve in the last week.

On Tuesday, the team added rookie safety Theo Jackson to the roster, who was selected by the Tennessee Titans in the 6th Round of the 2022 NFL Draft.

Previously, defensive tackle Khyiris Tonga was added to the roster after Cine hit injured reserve.

A rookie from Tennessee, Jackson couldn’t quite make the Titans 53-man roster at the end of August. But he did reach the Titans practice squad a few days after the Tennessee roster waiver and has remained since. The Vikings came along and swiped Jackson from the Titans practice squad, probably a defender that Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, Kevin O’Connell, and Ed Donatell studied during the draft build-up.

The Vikings now have five safeties on the active roster, at least for now: Harrison Smith, Camryn Bynum, Josh Metellus, Myles Dorn, and Jackson. Adofo-Mensah also re-signed a family summer face, Mike Brown, at safety after the Cine injury news.

Jackson likely won’t play much with Minnesota’s crowded house at safety but will be available in case of injury. He played 47 games in college at Tennessee, recording 190 total tackles, 17 passes defended, 12 tackles for loss, 3 interceptions, a fumble recovery, and a touchdown. Jackson also earned 2nd-Team All-SEC Honors in 2021.

Here’s some draft tale-of-the-tape for Jackson from the 2022 draft lead-up:

Jackson was teammates with Velus Jones (Bears, WR), Jauan Jennings (49ers, WR), Josh Palmer (Chargers, WR), and Trey Smith (Chiefs, OL) at the University of Tennessee. He turned 25 in October.

The Vikings defense ranks 21st in the NFL through five weeks per defensive EPA/Play.
