Q: Do you guys have optimism that Kellen Mond will become the Vikings backup quarterback over Sean Mannion?
A: Yes, we have optimism for Mond to end up as QB2, but it is tapered enthusiasm.
The job is there for him to go get — plain and simple. If he wants — and if he’s good enough — it should be the easiest task on the planet to supplant Sean Mannion, who is not very dynamic.
A lot can change in a summer. Remember K.J. Osborn seizing the WR3 job out of nowhere? Mond could do that with QB2, too, and his path is simpler than Osborn’s in 2021.
Q: I saw the article with Patrick Peterson endorsing the addition of Derek Stingley in the draft. Would Stingley start on Day One?
A: Stingley probably wouldn’t take over for Dantzler, but he’d receive ample time inside the Vikings 2022 defense if drafted. Cornerbacks, especially those chosen in the Top 12, should be Day-One-ready commodities.
You can bank on Stingley– or Ahmad Gardner — playing a lot in 2022 if one of those dudes is the pick.
Q: Dan Orlovsky called the Vikings a “sleeper.” Do you think the rest of the world will agree with him by the start of the regular season?
A: No, the rest of the world will consider the Vikings a franchise led by Kirk Cousins with a 9-8 ceiling.
And that’s fine. It maintains the sleeper status. Orlovsky indeed called the Vikings and Jacksonville Jaguars sleepers. So, with the definition of that word, the Vikings would fly under the radar until they started the 2022 regular season with a 5-2 record or so.
Vikings fans would love it.
