Purple Rumor Mill: A New QB Auditions, Thy Vilain, 49ers as Practice Mates

VikingsTerritory‘s Purple Rumor Mill is a two-day chronicle each week. All the week’s rumors are lassoed and plopped in two spots — articles on Saturday and Sunday — for review. Today is the May 14th edition.

Remember — rumors are rumors. What you read on weekends in these pieces is what the world is talking about pertaining to the Vikings, not necessarily items that will come to fruition.

Rumor: Brett Hundley will eventually be the QB2 for the 2022 Vikings.

Vikings Have a Look at New QB
Brett Hundley

This one came from Hundley’s surprise presence at Vikings rookie minicamp.

Generally speaking, it’s probably a longshot that this all comes together with Hundley usurping the QB2 job from Sean Mannion or Kellen Mond. But to be frank, Hundley has more QB2 experience than Mannion and Mond combined.

It makes sense to have an interest in the ex-Packer for QB2 — but also would quietly say volumes about the lack of faith in Mond, who was drafted with 3rd-Round draft capital last year.

Rumor: Luiji Vilain will get significant playing time in 2022 as his talent flew under the radar in the draft.

There have been all kinds of hype nuggets about this undrafted man, mainly from draft scouts and trainers.

Thankfully for Vilain’s sake, if his goal is playing time right away, the Vikings don’t have a sure-fire starter after Danielle Hunter and Za’Darius Smith. D.J. Wonnum performs well in spots, but it’s debatable whether he’s a starting-caliber EDGE rusher.

We don’t foresee Vilain snatching much playing time in 2022, but stranger things have happened.

If he wants it, there’s a reasonable path for Vilain to grab it.

Rumor: The 49ers will practice and scrimmage with the Vikings this summer.

Of the rumor docket today, this one is the most likely to achieve fruition.

Kwesi Adofo-Mensah was employed by the 49ers for six years, so he’ll still have ties to the organization. The Vikings need a summer dance partner, and we’ll bank on San Francisco becoming the nominee.
