Gotta Hear It: Vikings Quote of the Day — March 5, 2022

Trevor Ruszkowski-USA TODAY Sports

Each day, we select a quote about the Minnesota Vikings, uplifting the sentiment of the day or highlighting something notable.

The remark can come from a Vikings player, coach, writer, fan — or anybody, really. Selection of the quote is arbitrary. The excerpt may be insightful, humorous, groundbreaking, outlandish, or foolish. If you have a quote of the day (your own or from someone else), please send it to [email protected].

This quote is from March 3rd, 2022, by Chris Tomasson from the Pioneer Press, commenting about the Vikings exploring quarterbacks at the NFL combine:

“Cincinnati Bearcats QB Desmond Ridder said at the combine that the Vikings are among seven or eight teams that he so far has talked to in advance of the draft.”

And here’s the official tweet:

This is noteworthy because it shows the Vikings are semi-bold in speaking to quarterbacks inside of a draft renowned for underwhelming talent. Plus, Minnesota already employs Kirk Cousins and Kellen Mond.

At some point, Minnesota may pivot to a rookie quarterback after the Cousins era. That could be in a couple of weeks — or in a couple of years. Indeed, it’s common for teams to meet with players at the combine — no matter the roster need — so the Vikings chatting with Ridders should not be considered a smoking gun of anything. However, Ridder could be a mid-round passer drafted in the vein of Mond in 2021.

The Vikings didn’t get a good look at Mond last season as former head coach Mike Zimmer wasn’t too sold on his rookie talents. Mond played a smidgen against the Green Bay Packers in Week 17, but after the game, Zimmer told reporters he didn’t want to see much of Mond thereafter. It was a bizarre moment in Vikings history.

The takeaway? Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and Kevin O’Connell are talking to rookie quarterbacks from the allegedly skimpy draft class.

All options are on the table.
