Vikings Territory Breakdown Podcast: Free Agency—It’s Always a Gamble

If I was a betting man (but I live in Minnesota, so I can’t yet be a legal one) I would bet that the Vikings are still going to take a corner back at pick number 12 in the draft. Corner back is one of the most important positions on defense in this modern-day NFL, and one the Vikings are still deficient in despite their recent free-agent signings. The Vikings have worked hard to rebuild their defense throughout the free agency period with the signings of edge-rusher Za’Darius Smith, nose tackle Harrison Phillips, linebacker Jordan Hicks, cornerback Chandon Sullivan and cornerback Nate Hairston—and the re-signing of cornerback Patrick Peterson and keeping defensive end Danielle Hunter. It is hard not to like what they are doing.

And we will talk about that on the Vikings Territory Breakdown podcast with Mark Craig from the Star Tribune and Joe Oberle from and We will also talk about the offensive line—specifically at the right guard position, a problem situation that the Vikings’ new regime has been busy trying to rectify and rebuild the offensive line. The team has signed G/C Austin Schlottmann, OL Jesse Davis, and most recently, G Chris Reed. This, too, looks like a concerted effort to fix that hole in quarterback Kirk Cousins’ protection.

We will also take a gander at what else the Vikings have up their sleeve in free agency, with just a short time (and being short on cap space) yet before the NFL Draft (April 28). There are some moves still to make, but the major moves appear to have been made. If I was betting man, I would wager they are done with the big free agency acquisitions.

And maybe I will be a betting man soon. Everyday we hear of more states that are legalizing sports gambling, and with a bill for sports betting here in Minnesota having been created and beginning to get consideration, the time maybe ripe for it to happen finally. And you can between will be talking about that.

So, tune into the VT Breakdown podcast and see which of the Vikings’ free agency horses we are betting on to help them this season. Some are long shots, and some might just get them to the finish line—although I wouldn’t bet on it.
