The Vikings have stepped up to help in this massive time of need.

While the world/economy grinds to a near standstill, local institutions have stepped up to provided much needed services to an increasing number of people during the COVID-19 pandemic. One such institution is the Minnesota Vikings, who sent out a press release today regarding work that they’re doing alongside Xcel Energy and The Open Door, to provide meals to… I’ll let them explain:

The Vikings Table food truck, a program of the Minnesota Vikings Foundation, is helping provide free, healthy meals to the local community amid the COVID-19 crisis. After serving 4,000 meals in the first six months of the food truck’s operation, the Foundation adjusted its traditional service model to comply with guidelines set by the CDC and the Minnesota Department of Health, as well as Governor Walz’s Executive Order, in order to continue providing much-needed meals to at-risk youth during this time.

Beginning yesterday and extending for two weeks, Vikings Table is aiming to provide 100 individually-packaged meals every weekday for a total of 1,000 much-needed meals to youth in our community. The meals, consisting of sandwiches with a side of fruit and/or vegetables, will be delivered to The Open Door, which will further distribute the meals to neighborhoods that have limited transportation options and/or do not qualify for the free meals being served at schools.

Each meal kit will also include Vikings Table branded activity pages (see attached) for kids. Participants of the program can share completed activity pages on social media using #VikingsFamilyTable.

Additionally, the food truck will employ recently laid off restaurant workers as the workforce to prepare and deliver the meals.

Xcel Energy, the presenting sponsor of Vikings Table, have committed the bags for each meal.

The Foundation is currently exploring options for continued operation beyond mid-April to continue providing meals to local youth.

Additionally, there has been talk in larger cities of converting stadiums the size and scope of US Bank into defacto treatment centers for those stricken with COVID-19. It’s things like that that reinforce just how important professional sports teams can be for the markets they inhabit. While we haven’t heard anything regarding US Bank Stadium, it is a relief to see the Vikings being proactive during this crisis and really showing why they’re such an important part of our local culture in Minnesota.
