According to Ian Rapoport, Gary Kubiak has been named the new offensive coordinator of the Minnesota Vikings. Following the departure of Kevin Stefanski, who became the head coach of the Cleveland Browns, Kubiak now becomes the Vikings’ fifth offensive coordinator in five years.

Despite replacing Stefanski as the lead play caller and changing job titles, not much else is expected to change with the Vikings offense. Head coach Mike Zimmer stressed the important of continuity in his season-ending press conference.

“I like the scheme. I like the continuity that we have offensively with the coaches,” Zimmer said. “And I feel like if we have a couple more pieces and continue to work on the execution of staying with the same play-calls, the same system, the same motions and formations and things like that it will definitely help the offensive players.”

Kubiak, 58, was hired by the Vikings in January of 2019 as assistant head coach and offensive advisor. He also acted as a mentor to Stefanski, a first-year play caller. Before coming to Minnesota, Kubiak was a senior personnel advisor for Denver under John Elway. He was head coach of the Broncos from 2015-2016 but walked away from coaching following the 2016 season to focus on his health.

Previous experience

Kubiak has won four Super Bowls as an NFL coach. He spent 10 seasons as a head coach in the NFL (eight with Houston and two with Denver), posting an 82-75 record, including a a 21-11 mark and a perfect 3-0 in the postseason with Denver that ended with a Super Bowl 50 win. He’s a former NFL quarterback with nine years of playing experience and been coaching in the NFL since 1994.
