According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the Minnesota Vikings are finalizing a trade with the Denver Broncos to acquire quarterback Trevor Siemian.

Siemian, 26, has one year left on his rookie contract for $1.905 million.

Siemian is 6-3, 220 pounds. A Northwestern graduate, he was drafted by the Broncos in the 7th-round of the 2015 draft. In three NFL seasons Siemian has started 24 games, compiling a 13-11 record as a starter. He’s completed 495 of 835 passes (59.3%) for 5,686 yards with 30 touchdowns and 24 interception. His career passer rating is 79.9.

Here’s a quick summary of Siemian’s career:

  • 2015: Sat behind Peyton Manning and Brock Osweiler. He appeared in one game but did not register any stats.
  • 2016: Started 14 games and went 8-6. Completed 59.5% of his passes and threw for 3,401 yards with 18 touchdowns and ten interceptions. Averaged 242.9 yards per game and was sacked 31 times.
  • 2017: Started 10 games and went 5-5, Completed 59% of his passes and threw for 2,285 yards with 12 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. Averaged 207.7 yards per game through the air and earned a Pro Football Focus grade of 53.2. He was sacked 33 times.

Siemian will serve as the backup quarterback behind starter Kirk Cousins.

The Vikings were in need of a backup after losing three quarterbacks in free agency. They were able to land a very affordable one. Siemian is making less than Case Keenum did last season. Keenum signed with Siemian’s former team, the Broncos, yesterday.

UPDATE:

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Vikings will receive Siemian and a 2018 draft pick in exchange for a 2019 pick. Mike Klis of Denver media later reported the details; the Vikings send a 2019 fifth-round pick to Denver for a 2018 seventh-rounder and Siemian.
