According to the Minnesota Vikings’ Twitter page, the team has signed safety Tommy Armstrong. The Vikings originally told Armstrong they would not sign him after he took part in the team’s rookie minicamp early in May.

Apparently, things have changed.

Armstrong holds Nebraska teams records for:

  • Most starts by a quarterback (44)
  • Total offense (10,690 yards)
  • Total touchdowns (91)
  • Touchdown passes (67)
  • Pass completions (625)
  • Passing yards (8,871)

The team must have felt Armstrong’s athleticism was too good not to give him a shot at cracking the final 53-man roster. The former Nebraska quarterback is a project player who will need time to develop and learn his new position. Armstrong will compete with Jayron Kearse, Anthony Harris, Jack Tocho, and Antone Exum for a place on the roster. He may wind up being a good candidate for the practice squad.

The Vikings waived wide receiver Mitch Mathews to free up a roster spot for Armstrong.
