Alex Boone and Other Vikings Free Agent Thoughts [PODCAST]

Alex Boone, COME ON DOWN!

NFL free agency is upon us and Rick Spielman is doing his Rick thing, eschewing the mega deals and finding valuable comparables at a fraction of the price. Rick is indeed the TJ Maxx of the NFL and I love that. We didn’t get Kelechi Osemele or George Iloka. Who cares? We didn’t get Mike Iupati or Michael Johnson last year and didn’t go 0-16. Good teams don’t care about winning in March.

Making It Rain (Responsibly) Talking Points Include:
• Retaining Our Own Free Agents is Smart
• Hello, Alex Boone
• Matt Kalil Remains a Viking (Good?)
• What the Vikings Offensive Line May Look Like
• Good Teams Don’t Overspend in Open Free Agency
• This Doesn’t Change Anything in the Draft
• Twitter/Facebook Questions

All that and other “In Rick We Trust” nonsense on this edition of the Purple FTW! Podcast.

  1. Basically the same player. Lol. Stretching that just a bit.
Seriously though if Boone sucks at LG (better at RG) this isn’t a huge upgrade over Fusco. An upgrade to be sure but from sounds of he struggled at LG.

  2. Osemele getting paid more than Kalil because he is better than Kalil, and will be playing LT for Oakland. Cap going to keep going up, Osemele contract in two years might look pretty good. But you’re right, tough to outbid the raiders.

Your basis for Osemele not playing well at LT isn’t well supported. Glad we were aggressive, but didn’t over spend.

Still very concerned about left side of line. Boone, OK but Boone is no Linval. For the record I was stoked when we got Linval.

    1. Osemele’s started 3 games at LT in the NFL out of 51 starts. He might develop into a solid NFL LT, but it’s a big gamble. There’s a reason why he was instantly considered a guard coming into the draft even though he started at LT for two seasons at Iowa State.

      1. I agree with Andy’s inclusion of the word “gamble”. Well known that K.O. is a very good guard. But it is a gamble that he will be as good at the tackle spot against the best edge rushers in the league. He will be the NFL’s most over payed guard if he does not pan out as a LT. I was hoping that MN could get him, but glad that they bailed when the price went over 10 Million. I am concerned right now. They have Fusco, Harris (who rated higher than Boone) and Boone to fill the guard positions. Loadholt, Clemmings, and Harris to compete for RT. (I am not worried about center with Sully and Berger, although they could let one of them go, most likely Sully with the much greater cap hit and injury concerns) and hope that they did get fair value in the Hodges trade. I digress, this still leaves a big concern at LT.
