REPORT: Marcus Sherels To Return To The Vikings

If you are still tracking the Vikings free agency possibilities late on this Friday evening then your patience has been rewarded. The Vikings have reportedly agreed to a two year deal with punt returner and reserve cornerback Marcus Sherels.
The report comes from Chris Tomasson (who has done an amazing job this offseason) of the Pioneer Press. Tomasson says that terms were agreed to on Friday and Sherels will officially sign his new contract on Monday.
Sherels had visited the New York Jets this week, who are in need of a punt return specialist, but the deal was reached upon his return to Minnesota.
The decision to bring Sherels back should solve on of this offseason’s question marks in terms of the punt return duties in 2016, assuming Sherels retains the job into September. The terms of the deal, which are not yet available, will surely tell us more about the possibility (or lack thereof) of Sherels losing his roster spot in Mankato this year.
Sherels is widely viewed as a liability in coverage, but seldom sees the field now that Mike Zimmer and Rick Spielman have bolstered the depth chart over the last two years. His true value comes on special teams where he averaged 9.1 yards per punt return in 2015 and scored a touchdown.
Sherels his 28 years old and will enter his sixth NFL season, all of which have been spent with the Vikings ever since he went undrafted out of the University of Minnesota in 2010.
