Because my first round mock draft was so successful (5 of 32, baby!), I thought it’d be a great idea to do a Day 2 Mock Draft. Really, this is just a fun exercise to see what players might be available when the Vikings are on the clock in rounds 2 and 3. Sort of an exhibit to an article I posted earlier today looking deeper at potential Vikings targets.
After selecting Trae Waynes in the first round, the Vikings biggest positions of need remain linebacker, safety, guard and maybe wide receiver. Luckily for us, there are so exceptional prospects still available and some are surely to fall.
Check out the full simulation of Round 2 below as well as a little bit of Round 3 until the Vikings are back on the clock.
1 (33) Titans / T.J. Clemmings, OT – Pittsburgh
2 (34) Buccaneers / Jake Fisher, OT – Oregon
3 (35) Raiders / Owamagbe Odighizuw, Edge – UCLA
4 (36) Jaguars / Benardrick McKinney, ILB – Mississippi St.
5 (37) Jets / Brett Hundley, QB – UCLA
6 (38) Redskins / Landon Collins, SS – Alabama
7 (39) Bears / Randy Gregory, Edge – Nebraska
8 (40) Giants / Eli Harold, Edge – Virginia
9 (41) Rams / A.J. Cann, OG – South Carolina
10 (42) Falcons / Eric Kendricks, ILB – UCLA
11 (43) Browns / Jaelen Strong, WR – ASU
12 (44) Saints / Dorial Green-Beckham, WR – Missouri
13 (45) Vikings / Paul Dawson, ILB – TCU
Paul Dawson makes up for what he lacks in athletic ability with borderline elite instincts. A play-maker through and through, Dawson is a fiery prospect who would round out the Vikings linebacker corps very well. There are a number of inside linebackers who will likely (hopefully?) be available for the Vikings in the second round and that is the route I expect them to go. Preston Smith is an interesting prospect who would really strengthen the Vikings defensive end rotation. Eric Rowe is a dynamic defensive back who could excel at safety next to Harrison Smith.
(Alternate Picks: Preston Smith, Denzel Perryman, Eric Rowe, Nate Orchard, Devin Smith, Devin Funchess)

7 (71) Bears / Grady Jarrett, DT – Clemson
8 (72) Rams / Sammie Coates, WR – Auburn
9 (72) Falcons / David Cobb, RB – Minnesota
10 (74) Giants / Ronald Darby, CB – Florida St.
11 (75) Saints / Clive Walford, TE – Miami (FL)
12 (76) Vikings / Mario Edwards Jr., Edge – Florida St.
This is an incredible value for the Vikings in the third round. Translation: Mario Edwards Jr. will likely not be available in the third round for the Vikings. Jason La Canfora floated out a rumor earlier this month that the Vikings were high on Mario Edwards. In fact, La Canfora suggested that Edwards Jr. may even be selected in the first round. The defensive end from Florida State could be used in a rotation with veteran end Brian Robinson to make Zimmer’s edge rotation more robust.
(Alternate Picks: Ifo Ekpre-Olomu, Hau’oli Kikaha, Tre’ Jackson, Kwon Alexander, Derron Smith)
