Vikings Inactives: Illness Sidelines Everson Griffen

No matter how extraordinary football players are on the field, they’re still human off of it, and everyday illnesses can sideline the best athletes. That’s the case for Minnesota Vikings defensive end Everson Griffen, who will miss today’s game with an undisclosed illness. In his place, rookie Danielle Hunter will start and hopefully, build on his 25 career snaps for a productive day against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Griffen isn’t the only surprise on the list — wide receiver Charles Johnson will also miss the game with sore ribs, paving the way for rookie wide receiver Stefon Diggs to take over split end duties in his place. Below, a look at the rest of the inactives list, which includes a few familiar names and some welcome exclusions:

With Griffen and Justin Trattou out, the Vikings enter Week 6 with just three active defensive ends: Brian Robison, Danielle Hunter, and Scott Crichton. The group should play well against a Chiefs offensive line that has given up 22 sacks on the season, which leads the league through five games.

Making his first appearance on the active gameday roster is rookie Edmond Robinson, who will play some special teams. Newcomer Nick Easton, who arrived from San Francisco through the Gerald Hodges trade, is also inactive.

Watch for Stefon Diggs and Mike Wallace to thrive against a depleted Chiefs secondary, which has given up the most passing touchdowns to opposing quarterbacks this season. Both Diggs and Wallace played well in Denver two weeks ago, and that was against the league’s best defense. If Norv Turner can get Adrian Peterson running early, Teddy Bridgewater will find opportunities in the passing game.
