Buried in roster cuts, the Vikings add new offensive line depth to the roster through a trade with the San Diego Chargers.

With a flurry of cuts coming before today’s deadline where teams are required to slim their roster down to 53 players, the Vikings have made a trade with the San Diego Chargers for offensive lineman Jeremiah Sirles.

Though the official details of the trade are currently unknown, it is believed the Vikings sent a 2016 sixth round pick to the Chargers for Sirles.

Sirles, an undrafted free agent in the 2014 NFL Draft, only started two games last season at guard in place of injured Chargers lineman Johnnie Troutman. This preseason, Sirles has performed pretty well according to rankings provided by Pro Football Focus. See below for where Sirles would have ranked against other Vikings lineman had he been on the roster this preseason:

It is not expected Sirles will be an immediate contributor on the starting roster, but instead, a solid piece of depth to a roster currently void of any.

We will have a more in-depth breakdown of today’s roster cuts later this evening, but for now, here’s a list of the players currently believed to have been cut:

  • LB Michael Mauti
  • LB Brandon Watts
  • OL Tom Farniok
  • LB Brian Peters
  • WR Isaac Fruechte
  • OL Tyrus Thompson
  • S Anthony Harris
  • RB Dominique Williams
  • FB Blake Renaud
  • WR Ryan Whalen

  • OL David Yankey
  • OL Babatunde Aiyegbusi
  • DB Shaun Prater
  • CB Josh Thomas
  • RB DuJuan Harris
  • OG Bobby Vardaro
  • DE Leon Mackey
  • WR Donte Foster
  • DT Chigbo Anunoby

Stay tuned for more!

Carl: Josh Thomas, CB
When the Vikings agreed to terms with Josh Thomas on July 24, I didn’t think he had much of a chance to make the 53-man roster. After a strong camp and a great showing against the Raiders (six tackles, a tackle for loss and an interception), Thomas is making a case that he belongs on this football team. With Josh Robinson on the PUP, Jabari Price looking at a two-game suspension and Stefon Diggs flashing as the real deal for punt returner (sorry Marcus Sherels), Thomas might be earning more than just a short-term look. With 10 starts under his belt with the Carolina Panthers, the 2011 fifth-round pick by the Dallas Cowboys may not be a “major” surprise at this point, but he is peaking at the right time and earns my pick to make the cut.

Brent: Chase Ford, TE
Going out on an absolute limb here. I realize it seems crazy to carry four tight ends — but I wonder if the Vikings choose to carry an extra tight end in place of a fullback. As I’ve noted in my piece projecting the final 53-man roster, I would value Ford’s receiving abilities more than I would Line’s lead blocking. There are a variety of reasons for this, but I like the opportunity to run the offense in more 3 WR sets without a lead blocker, and Rudolph’s injury history leaves me wanting another receiving tight end.  Additionally, Ellison’s and Pruitt’s ability to fill in as a lead blocker if needed ensures the Vikings don’t need to be forced to carry a fullback.

The Minnesota Vikings topped the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 26-16 Saturday at The Sauna… I mean The Bank. Mike Zimmer extends his career head coaching preseason record to a robust 6-0, but it came at a price as veteran road-grading right tackle Phil Loadholt was lost for the season with a torn achilles. The much maligned offensive line now has a new set of obstacles. Who’s gonna step up? TJ Clemmings? Austin Shepherd? Babs? (Not Babs)

We dig into the NEW problematic offensive tackle position for the Vikings as well as touch on other “Not-so Famous Jameis” talking points on today’s recap show.

• The Dogra Bowl – Welcome back Leslie Frazier
• Phil Loadholt done for the year, career as a Viking?
• Will TJ Clemmings step up?

• Teddy looked sharp & in command
• Was it Zach Line’s birthday?
• McKINNON MAY NEVER SCORE AN NFL TD
• WTF, Cordarrelle?
• Stefon Diggs is a lot of fun to watch
• Blanton is going to start, but it’s close
• Marcus Sherels is under-appreciated. We don’t deserve him.
• We are very lucky to have Tom Johnson
• Long snapper: No one cares. Just pick one.
• Taylor Heinicke. Me likey.
• Good things happen when Gerald Hodges is on the field
• Don’t bet against Adam Thielen (You can bet against Fruechte though)
• Eric Kendricks is an animal
