Vikings OTAs: 7 Positions Up For Grabs

The Minnesota Vikings’ organized team activities, or OTAs, began Tuesday. OTAs are offseason training sessions run with the purpose of developing players; or, simply put, practices without tackling. There are no 1-on-1 drills, only team drills.

OTAs can be a good barometer of how the team’s roster is going to shape up come the regular season. Generally, the players who practice together play together. Certainly, there are exceptions.

Lets take a look at several key position battles that will unfold during the Vikings preseason.

Which Vikings receivers will make the team in 2017?

After failing to sign any free agent receivers before the draft, the Minnesota Vikings were able to land a quality wideout in Michael Floyd last Wednesday. By adding Floyd, the Vikings are suddenly deep at wideout. Very deep. Now the question becomes, who will make the team?

Here’s a quick look at the top receivers currently on the Vikings offseason roster:

According to Tommy Armstrong on Twitter, the Minnesota Vikings will not sign the former Nebraska Cornhuskers quarterback to the 90-man roster.

Armstrong participated in the Vikings’ recent rookie minicamp, where he shifted from quarterback to running back, and then again to safety.

Despite being recruited as a safety out of high school, Armstrong became a decorated signal-caller in college. He finished his Cornhuskers career first in Nebraska history in passing yards (8,871) and touchdowns (67). Armstrong is a natural athlete that should latch on with another NFL team before training camp begins in August.

The Minnesota Vikings have finalized their practice squad. Well, they’ve finalized it to the extent that a practice squad can be finalized, anyway.

Austin Belisle has done a fine job tracking all of the practice squad related news today and I’m simply here to do a little tidying up around the joint.

Austin had already listed the following players as having been retained via the practice squad:

  • WR Moritz Böhringer
  • RB C.J. Ham
  • DT Toby Johnson
  • CB Tre Roberson
  • QB Joel Stave
  • OG Willie Beavers
  • TE Kyle Carter
  • DE Stephen Weatherly
  • OG Isame Faciane

The Vikings brought the count to ten by adding a safety, according to Christopher Gates of the Daily Norseman.

The Minnesota Fightin’ Vikings mercifully put an end to the preseason Thursday night against the St. Louis Los Angeles Rams of Anaheim. A few story lines emerged as many 4th preseason game participants did their best to scrape together a roster spot (OMG TOBY JOHNSON!), but the main story still hovering over the Purple is the quarterback void left by Teddy Bridgewater and his freak practice injury.
