This year’s NFL offseason is shaping up to be one of the most memorable in recent history. Not only have CBA talks advanced, the Combine shed light on an incredibly deep wide receiver class and an unprecedented group of quarterbacks including Dak Prescott, Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Philip Rivers and Teddy Bridgewater is set to hit free agency. It’s an offseason that has the potential to change the landscape of the NFL.
Five Minnesota Vikings were added to the NFC’s Pro Bowl roster on Tuesday, the team announced. Quarterback Kirk Cousins, fullback CJ Ham, defensive end Everson Griffen, linebacker Eric Kendricks and cornerback Xavier Rhodes were added as alternates to the all-star game. That makes eight players from the Vikings to make the 2020 Pro Bowl.
Due to San Francisco’s 37-20 victory over Green Bay and subsequent Super Bowl appearance, 49ers fullback Kyle Juszczyk will not be able to attend the Pro Bowl. Shortly after the NFC Championship Game, his alternate was announced. Minnesota Vikings fullback CJ Ham will take his place.
Between the NFL Combine (February 24th-March 2nd) and the 2020 NFL Draft (April 23rd-25th) comes an important step in every team’s offseason process; the re-signing of internal personnel.Last year the Vikings created headlines during the free agency period by extending wide receiver Adam Thielen. There was also the story of Anthony Barr reneging on his verbal agreement with the New York Jets and returning to Minnesota.
While the Vikings are in the midst of closing out the regular season, the salary cap specialists over at Spotrac are peeking ahead to the offseason. They recently published an article naming a contract extension candidate and roster bubble candidate for each NFL team.
In only four days the Vikings roster will be cut down from 88 players to 53. By 3pm (CST) on Saturday the regular season squad, along with a 10-man practice squad, will be assembled. The team began trimming the fat on Tuesday, releasing cornerback Bene Benwikere and wide receiver Jordan Taylor. The Minnesota Vikings made four transactions in the day leading up to training camp. They waived running back Roc Thomas and added guard Tiano Pupungatoa, then waived safety Micah Abernathy and acquired running back De’Angelo Henderson. Now, a few days into training camp, the team roster sits at an offseason maximum 90 players. To get caught up on who’s all on the team, let’s take a look at the current players that comprise the roster. To make things a little more interesting, I’ve noted which players will become free agents following the season and also added my 53-man projection. The Vikings will trim down the roster to 53 players on August 31st (3pm CST deadline).
